Writing an essay

So I have to write an essay for College English. It has to be a compare and contrast, but I have no idea what to write about. She's letting us pick as long as we don't write about Mac vs PC or XBOX vs Playstation. She says that when she has 20 students in her class, 9 write about mac vs pc and 9 write about xbox vs PS. The other 2 actually have good papers. I've been thinking about it today but I still don't know lol. I wanted to do WoW vs Maple but I already know she wouldn't care enough/know enough about that to give me a good grade lol.

Any suggestions? something vs something?

Online gaming versus... going outside and playing sports or something?

Democracy vs Dictatorship
Lego bricks vs Clay
Books vs Movies
Bottles vs Cans
One sport vs Another sport

I'd say pick something you have some sort of interest for, find it's opposite, dig deep and fire away. Something you really like versus something you really hate might also be interesting.

This. A compare and contrast is easiest when you pick something you're familiar with/have feelings towards. I'm assuming you can write with a preference towards one side, which would make writing it more interesting, since you get to discuss why you feel some way.

Write about something that actually interests youuuu!! Well if you like the gaming thing...

- How kids "play" today versus how they did before video games/internet/technology boom
- Online versus offline ("real life") behaviour / society / etc.

I don't know...personally I think you could make really any topic work. Good luck.

capitalism vs communism sounds pretty good. I'll see what kind of resources I can dig up for information for that if I don't think of anything else.

Any paper is good if its written good. It has nothing to do with content. Only context. The reason those 18 student sucked because they spent more time playing the console than writing the paper about the console. If you wanna do WoW vs MS, and know enough about both, go for it. I've written papers that at the root were basically rants about Nexon and their shitty customer service and still made an A on it.

If you're doing a topic that's unfamiliar to most people, balance it by picking supporting arguments that are familiar to people. Compare pomegranate to Hitler, allude to generalized social context. WoW economy vs MS economy then allude to today's economy. Compare the social behavior of WoW players to MS players and throw in some generalized points about behavior defined from psychology. It's not about the content, it's about the context.

You don't have to do an vs-thing either, though that's what you most likely gain in the end.

I know any paper is good if it's written good, but the point she's trying to make is that she sees so many xbox and mac papers that she doesn't want to see any more. That's one of the first things she mentioned when she brought up the assignment. No mac vs PC and no xbox vs playstation.

One thing to remember, the topic should fir the length. Beyond that, have a good topic sentence. Why not do a comparative on books and movies?
