Solution to HackShield error 66817
#1
I finally fixed it. I was getting this error for a week before I found out what to do.

Okay, basically, you get this error (if you're hacking, duh) when you have a program that constatly scans processes for trojans, other crap, etc..

Use Hijackthis to find out if you have a program called ProcessGuard on your computer. Even if you think you've uninstalled and gotten rid of this program, it still partially remains in your computers drivers folder, so take these steps to get rid of them.

Search these files and delete any of them:
procguard.sys - protection driver
dcsuserprot.exe - service mode application
pgaccount.exe - user mode application
procguard.exe - main program interface

This should stop you from getting the error.

If this doesn't thread doesn't help you, perhaps you have another program that is looking over your processes. Uninstall anything like this to fix your problem.

I dont remember putting it on my computer, but I guess it's to block certain "bad" processes from running and affecting other processes. But I don't really think it works.

I found the first one out of those four and I tried to play again, didnt work. How do I check for other files relating to this?

I'm stunned.. it actually worked!! I had to dig a little bit deeper though and uninstall the procguard.sys legacy driver in the device manager..

thanks so much! I can finally enjoy MS again, haha.

right click my computer, go to properties and the Hardware tab. click on Device Manager and when it comes up, navigate to View > Show hidden devices. under "Non-Plug and Play Drivers", find procguard.sys. right click, uninstall, then reboot. should work.

Finally got mine working, went with the method above but also removed npkcusb.sys (gameguard component) and StarForce (cd copy protect thingy)

I have no idea which one was the problem since I uninstalled both at once.

Once you are in Device Manager, you need to click on View / 'Show Hidden Devices' before you will see the 'Non-Plug and Play Drivers' section.

You can also use a program called Autoruns.exe to see all the low level hidden processes. Get it from:
http://www.sysinternals.com
this will take you to microsoft technet. Then click on 'process utilities', and look for autoruns. I can't give direct link, since it seems to be country-specific.

Be careful not to delete something essential, or you could make your computer non-bootable. Unless you know what you are doing, don't disable any drivers that are labeled Microsoft or Windows, and also avoid playing with low-level anti-virus functions.

At a somewhat higher level, you can also disable programs by running msconfig, and unchecking them. This is a good way to temporarily disable antivirus programs for example.

'Non plug and play' is a category of drivers as used in device manager. It is not an actual driver or process name. Autoruns uses different categories.

If Autoruns does not list procguard.sys, they you probably do not have it. Some other process must be the problem.

You can also try RUN msconfig and uncheck any non-Microsoft servicesand startups.

I am not an expert in this stuff. Only know a bit because I am hunting for a different problem.

Rootkits (like gameguard and hackshield) always cause these kind of garbage errors... Instead of producing a -total-system-clean-tool- themselves, people have to find this out themselves... crappy programmers ftl...

Anyway, good job whybanme, I think you helped a lot of people with this! Smile
