I/L vs. Cleric.
#1
What's this? Another "choose me a class, lassy!" thread. Annnyway. I'm trying magicians. Never been one before for an extended period of time. I'm LUKless ("What a stereotypical damage whore! Magician and LUKless?") and both I/Ls and Clerics appeal to me. I'm a very indecisive person and I can't seem to choose. Can someone list some pros/cons of each class, or give me more information on them? I want to have fun while playing, I don't care too much about high damage, but I'd also like to level fastish. I'll only be on Maple on the weekends for a bit, and I've always wanted to make it to the third job. Thanks guys.

If you plan to play slowly...

Clerics are cheap. Like all of second job and third job you could go potless cheap.
Which is nice.
I/L's are kinda cheap but not nearly as cheap as clerics.
2nd job both classes have killer mobbing skills but for soloing I/Ls are slightly better.
3rd job Priests at himes is godly exp. Priests with friends that kill BF/anego is Godly godly exp (free leech basically) Priests with friends that sell newts leech and need HS is also GOdly Godly exp.
...
IF/WHEN fourth job I/Ls are more expensive in pots but the freeze of Blizzard is SOOOO nice.Glitter
...
If I had to recommend pre-4th job I'd go Cleric (you'll never have to buy Gen 30 or other expensive skills so ya).Glitter

Cleric+
Pros:
  • Everything in the world handed to you.
  • Easiest 2nd job, 3rd job, and 4th job, no questions asked.
  • Greatly desired for bossing.
  • All the worthwhile leveling monsters ever are holy-weak, and even if they're not, whatever, Genesis is faster and generally just as effective at dispatching non-holy-weak (the gap between 1-hit, 2-hit, and 3-hit is huge) as the more powerful and costly Arch Mage ultimates.

Cons:
  • If "everything in the world handed to you" is a con for you, then that.
  • Boring.
  • It's slightly harder to level than I describe, under the assumption that you play the class like it was intended to be played, e.g. no Holy Symbol botting. However, it's still the easiest hands down. Unless you start factoring apples and stuff for physical classes.
  • Other than those, literally nothing. Easily the best class in the game in terms of raw mechanics.

Pros:
  • Awfully hard to screw over LUKless now.
  • Fun to play.
  • Very involving gameplay. You have to figure out how to best align your character to do maximum damage while taking minimal damage. This goes away when you get the "win the game" key.
  • Decent damage when properly outfitted.
  • Slow works on moving bosses. Only ones you'd really want to use it on are APQ Balrog and Papulatus, though. The rest are either too weak to matter or designed to be pinned.

Cons:
  • Historically, the wizard tracks get shafted on the things that matter. e.g. damage, LUK wizards getting totally owned by gear, etc. - but that doesn't matter much in the scope of current things.
  • Generally, people aren't interested in taking you to bosses unless you have some beast gear or are really high level. You might get some pity runs. Also, friends have a tendency to care less about this, depending.
  • Expensive as pineapple compared to the equivalent on the Cleric track.

There's a huge problem with both tracks and that's that their 4th job is reduced to "press ultimate key, win game." You could play it differently, sure, but why would you? It might be boring with the win game key, but it's way, way faster. There's not even a comparison.

Magicians are all good at mobbing, so you'll probably level pretty quick regardless of which one you choose.
