Annoying old computer - DrRusty - 2009-03-30

My older computer turns itself on every night at midnight and I don't know why. Anyone have a clue on how to make it stop doing that?

Unplug the computer? I'm assuming it's suppose to be completely powered off at night.

Honestly? I fear your life has just become a horror film.

Well I shut it down whenever i'm not using it. Every night at midnight though it turns itself back on :f6:. There's got to be some other way other than unplugging it.

Every night at the exact same time. It just did it which is what reminded me to make this thread (it's been doing it for months but usually im asleep by the time it does it so I don't pay much attention). When I do stay up though, it does it at the exact same time, every time.

My intuition says this is a hardware problem, as if it's supposedly completely powered down, as in no electricity running through the thing, then something's causing the circuits to jump. I have no idea what a computer does when it turns on though.

If it's that dang consistent, I'm prone to believe something has to be telling it to start up at that time. Some weird setting? Some program that is set to run and can cause the computer to boot?

Does it go through the shut down process or just turn off as if no power were going through the computer?

If it is the latter, the outlet you have the computer is plugged into may have a timer attached to it and is set to turn off at midnight.

Seems unlikely but it is it might be worth a look :<.

Check your computer's BIOS, it could possibly have a "wake-on/startup-on" setting.
