From what I understand, something drops them at a rate comparable to scrolls, and an NX item is used to 'open' it, giving you an item. Is this right? What drops them? How Often?

crimson guardian drops em, i think soem bosses too

Dead event is dead.
They used to drop off a few things. The gold boxes only came in great amounts from Crimson Guardians. You could open each for 1500 NX.

Rate is better than scrolls, more like Elpam magnets (if you've done that quest), or the rate of 2 ores, I got a box every 5~10 min at CGs.
And yes, the event is over.
