So... is this a scam? - ZachAttack - 2009-01-29

I just got an email saying this:

Greetings Maplers!

Congratulations on being one of the winners of the Spot the Difference Event. The prize for the event is a MapleStory Towel! All you need to do to claim your prize is verify your Nexon ID and provide us with your mailing address so we can get this out to you as soon as possible! If you live outside the United States, please provide us with your phone number. Due to the legality of the event as stated the contest official rules, winners who reside out of North America will not be eligible to receive their prize.

That's all it had.

It's from "einquiry@nexon.net"
I don't see any notice on the site mentioning winners, but I may have missed it.

Is this some sort of scam? Or do they always do this?

Anyway, thanks.

"NX ID"? Looks suspicious. Maybe password cracker?

Have you ever played the game?

And who's the email from? (Email address can be spoofed, but if it's not ___@nexon.net, it's definitely not Nexon.)

He's a 7x sader, and "It's from "einquiry@nexon.net'"

I think it's legit. If they're not asking for passwords, there's no harm - people can find out login IDs just by trying to register them, so if they were a pass cracker they'd be busy otherwise. Try sending a ticket asking about it (from the ID that won), and see if you get a response in 48 hours.

1) It's @nexon.net, leaving the possibility of validity
2) yes I did the event, it was the spot the differences thing a month or two ago

I'm not sure...

If you really won then i'd say its legit, but log a ticket or something just to play it safe.

So... is this a scam? - Providence - 2009-01-29

I think there's a way to hide your actual e-mail address under a false one. I'd hold off until you're 100% sure it's legitimate.

So... is this a scam? - ZachAttack - 2009-01-29

good idea, I logged a ticket. I'm waiting to see what this is about.

I looked up the details of the event (legal procedures) and noticed this:

"3. PROCEDURES:

During the Contest Period, you may enter the Contest and become an Entrant ("Entrant") by submitting two screenshots of the last score screen of each of the mini games. You must submit the image files through the Sponsor's Web Site only. At the close of the Contest Period, Sponsor shall choose twenty (20) Winners, subject to the conditions set forth herein. After the Winners are chosen, Sponsor shall send notification to each Winner via e-mail which shall also include a request for Winner's login ID. Winners shall have 48 hours to respond to Sponsor's message and supply its login information to be eligible to receive the Prize. Upon response, Sponsor shall then verify whether the Winner is in good standing with Sponsor's Web Site. Disqualification and the selection of an alternate winner may result from any of the following: [1] In the event Sponsor identifies a Winner who has been banned the Website, [2] the return of any notice as undeliverable; [5] potential winner's failure to respond to Sponsor's notification within 48 hours of receipt and [6] any other non-compliance of the Rules. In the event of disqualification, a new winner will be chosen subject to the same procedure set forth above. Odds of winning depend on the total number of eligible Entries received. A list of the Winners may be provided, by sending a self addressed stamped envelop to Nexon America Inc. at 137 N. Larchmont Blvd., #619 Los Angeles, CA 90004-3704. Allow 8-10 weeks for reply."

Doesn't necessarily validify it as someone could have just read that and abused it, but it still makes me think this is probably real.

Yeah im guessing its real then, they cant really get your pin/password through an email without you downloading something externally, if your ticket is untouched within 36 hours or so then i'd say make up your mind as to submit it or not. Sounds mostly safe though.

I just got this...sucks that I am outside of the US. Should I send my info anyway?

just make sure when you reply it's sending to the @nexon.net email address, seems legit (first I've ever seen in one of these threads Tongue)

So... is this a scam? - Retalion - 2009-01-29

That's the exact format as the one I received when I won so I'd say its legit..As stupid as it is, they do ask for that information when you win.

From personal experience, I gave them all the info, and got my Dell XPS just fine... which reminds me... I STILL DIDNT GET MY T-SHIRT >=(

So... is this a scam? - PKProStudio - 2009-01-29

It's legit. I've seen a lot of discussion about this before. If you reply to @nexon.net, it's not gonna hurt you.

You got a fricking computer, and you're complaining about a T-Shirt? >.>

There's still a chance that the email is spoofed- I wouldn't reply until I got a positive response in the ticket you sent.

As other people said, if its spoofed, how would emailing an official @nexon.net email give anyone other then nexon itself information? I mean, some scammers send emails with their emails masked to make it seem like its from nexon, but you cant reply to that address. They dont own it. Others, the ones that ask you to send them info, arent at nexon.net.

So... is this a scam? - haha01haha01 - 2009-01-30

basically, scammers can spoof the sending address, but not read mails sent to it. in this case they told you to reply to their email (not to mention they didnt ask for password\pin, and brute forcing an avarage 8 characters password not containing a dictionary word should take more then 200 billion years). its not a scam.

So... is this a scam? - Evilince - 2009-01-30

I am sure glad you posted this. It made me check an email account I don't use, that I had to make for another account on MS that is now my main account. Turns out I won some stuff from the pirate event too. I decided to just make an option to transfer all emails recieved on that email to the email account that I do use.

So... is this a scam? - LittlePrincess - 2009-01-30

they've done that on the last several contests. einquiry@nexon.net is their e-mail from the old ticketing system. When you push reply just make sure that is the e-mail address it's going to and it isn't a spoof with a different reply to address.

They posted some winners awhile ago but didn't send e-mails right away.

So... is this a scam? - ShadowFusion - 2009-01-30

be careful with this
you probably heard of the email bomb program before
with that you can insert any email and make it look real
im just saying it again be careful

please read the thread before you post. as previously stated in this thread, spoofers can only send emails, but not recieve replies.
