Quote:SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) — Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper will submit signatures on Tuesday to put a measure that would split California in six separate states.
The campaign announced the development with a tweet Monday:
[tweet]488817862258470912[/tweet]
Draper, who recently spoke at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, said that a state as big as California needs to be broken up to be more representative and more competitive.
“With six, you do get a good sense that you can drive 45 minutes in any direction and maybe be part of a different state and it keeps those states on their toes,” he said.
According to the “Six Californias” plan, each of the six states would have its own government and own collection of elected officials, including congressional representatives.
Much of the Bay Area, including Santa Cruz and Monterey, would become the state of Silicon Valley under the proposal. The northernmost counties would become Jefferson; some North Bay counties would become part of North California, an area that stretches through Sacramento to the Sierra; Stockton, Fresno and Bakersfield would be among Central California’s largest cities; Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara would end up in West California; and San Diego would become the major city in South California.
The proposal is largely dismissed by opponents, however. They say that even if the measure were to be approved by voters, splitting the state would still require an act by Congress.
“This is a colossal and divisive waste of time, energy, and money that will hurt the California brand, our ability to attract business and jobs, and move our state forward together,” Steve Maviglio, spokesman for the OneCalifornia committee, told the San Jose Mercury News.
Draper, though, remains undaunted about a Congressional act.
“I don’t know whether it will be the Democrats or the Republicans but one of those two parties, at some time in the future, will politically want to have to have six Californias and I believe that it will eventually happen,” he said
The petitions must be submitted to county registrars, who will have eight workdays to verify that the signatures are valid. If necessary, a thorough check could take an additional two months.

I don't like this.

I don't like this either, but only because changing the number of states is like... "Pluto no longer being a planet"-level devastating to me.

Also, there are like political factors which play into this that I should know, but have long since pushed out of my mind.

I don't know how is it there but IMO if someplace is big and with a high population density it's not a bad idea to split it in order to make it easier to handle, only problem I can see is that it might give funny ideas to Texa and then reps get a bunch of new seats(which might be why California wants to do it).

This will never pass.

Slow news day I guess.

My grandparents that live in California have stated that they wish a massive earthquake would hit that entire state and disconnect it from the continental united states, forming a physical quarantine zone. Add Texas into that equation and lets get this party started!

I have actually considered buying real estate near the San Andreas fault line for this reason.

Don't worry people, this nonsense will never pass. It's hardly the first time they've tried to split CA into smaller states.

Democrats will get 10 more seats in the senate. It's a debateable upside.

I know of several Californians that are "unhappy" (and that is an understatement) with the way the state is heading - due to the taxes and the political representation. I'm not surprised at all to hear this.

Well that's ten more people for big business to lobby so I guess the middle/underprivileged class has some upside in this.

Democrats Upside: More seats in Senate
Republicans Upside: Increased chance to get some of california's electoral vote if it can convince at least 1 of the 6 states to vote republican

I see this as likely to happen as Texas becoming its own country. (That was a thing, right?)

IIRC Texas is the only state that has the right to split up into smaller states. I don't know much about California politics or how the distribution of dem/rep is over there but it seems like a ploy to increase voting power towards a specific party. I wouldn't be surprised if this was backed by republicans trying to dilute and dismantle democrat votes, but again I'm just speculating.

I can't see it passing, and if it does I see it having to go all the way through the supreme court.

If they actually had creative names they would probably have far better chances.
