In progress now in Austin, TX, 3.5 hours left.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57590966/texas-senator-wendy-davis-filibusters-against-abortion-bill/

Quote:Wearing pink tennis shoes to prepare for nearly 13 consecutive hours of standing, a Democratic Texas state senator on Tuesday began a one-woman filibuster to block a GOP-led effort that would impose stringent new abortion restrictions across the nation's second-most populous state.

Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth began the filibuster at 11:18 a.m. CDT Tuesday. To derail a vote in the GOP-dominated Senate, she must keep speaking on the bill until midnight — the deadline for the end of the 30-day special session.

Before Davis began speaking, her chair was removed. CBSDFW.com reports that Davis must speak continuously -- and stay on topic -- the entire time. She is not allowed to lean against something for support. And she will not be able to stop or take a break, not even for meals or the restroom, during the entire 13-hour ordeal.

...Wow that's fucking hardcore

I love a good filibuster and this is definitely a worthy cause, but... man. This woman is a terrible speaker.

I may be too after ten hours of constant speaking.

Yeah, it's moments like this I can actually feel a pride for my home state, knowing that they're not all asses and idiots.

Well you have to consider she was a lot more coherent about 10 hours ago.

Wendy Davis Historic Filibuster - VerrKol - 2013-06-25

Ah I misread the start time. She's actually fairly impressive in some of her normal news interviews.

Wendy Davis Historic Filibuster - Jamesie - 2013-06-25

I find it amusing that they're making her do a real filibuster and not a "fake" filibuster like they almost always do nowadays.

EDIT: missed that it was a state senate. boring.
EDIT2: Laughing so hard at social justice bloggers on Tumblr.

I don't really take sides on the issue, but its cool that she's willing to do this. Also the way the Republicans are acting makes me feel good I voted Democrat.

Woooow I slept through all of this. This is amazing. Not even just that she has been standing there, speaking for over 12 hours, to put a stop to this but there is very clear support for her and the not-passing of this bill.

The crowd cheered for over 20 minutes to help stall and that almost made me cry tears of joy because of that dedication. And I don't normally care for politics.

It looks like the douchebags are still trying to vote despite the time running out, though? I can't really tell.

Wendy Davis Historic Filibuster - DeanNim - 2013-06-26

The texan government is pretty fucked up.

Wendy Davis Historic Filibuster - Kalemora - 2013-06-26

Senator Van De Putte is an actual queen. And then the crowd trying to stall the bill themselves. Amazing.
It's awful that after being so pineappleing uptight about rules it looks like they're still attempting to vote even though it is no longer June 25th.

Continuation.

Wendy Davis Historic Filibuster - DeanNim - 2013-06-26

i find it hilarious how men, of all people, are the ones voting if women can get abortion. its non'ya business... get out.

Wendy Davis Historic Filibuster - Rick - 2013-06-26

God dammit America why is this still a thing

Wendy Davis Historic Filibuster - Eos - 2013-06-26

To recap;
The filibuster itself semi failed when it was successfully contested with 2 hours remaining on the clock for having veered too far off topic.

She got a good 15-20 minute reaction from the masses though trying to help prolong the delay before they were able to resume proceedings, and the end result was the bill, which effectively would've shut down the majority of abortion clinics in Texas, died on the floor. Governor's office has pointed out they can call another special session to revisit the issue but considering how unprecedented the rebellion against the bill was I hope they'll think long and hard before trying to do so.

Died on the floor? You could say it was....aborted.

Technically still-born, but I resisted either pun as being severely bad taste.

Wendy Davis Historic Filibuster - MariettaRC - 2013-06-26

Goodness, I was about to lose it when I saw that they were trying to vote anyway. The power of the masses is incredible. It's hard to believe that they would try to vote anyway despite the overwhelming support against it from their own people.

I really wonder how disconnected from reality a lot of those people are.

Virginia Foxx from NC is pretty much what they aspire to be. The b`itch actually claims that there is no "college debt" issue and youth is just too lazy to get a job to pay for it.
