In a bit of a dilemma. - Kawasari Mimoto - 2008-12-19
Currently, I'm in my 3rd semester of CISCO's education courses. I'm majoring in 'Computer Network Administration' (aka Computer Networking). I have an overall average of 70-75% in every single semester. After talking to one of my other teachers, who I had for the class 'Network Security', I found out something.. he told me this:
"If you're having trouble in Networking, maybe the 'network' side of it isn't for you. Maybe you should try doing 'systems' instead."
Suddenly, it made me think a bit. I liked to take apart computers, put them back together, and I like to tinker with software along with hardware. I also 'sorta' like doing things that are Servers-related. CISCO classes are incredibly hard (imo) at the moment, my next semester, I'm doing WAN-related things. I have to build a WAN network on Packet Tracer (simulator).
I completely.. hate... subnetting, let alone VLSM [Variable Length Subnet Masking?]. I heard that even after I graduate and get an Associate's Degree, along with my CISCO CCNA Certification (assuming I pass a Certification Exam), I can continue to a 4 year school, and major in Computer Science?
For Computer-majors out there, I have several questions:
1) What is Computer Science? I heard it's a 'generalized' computer major where you learn about basically ..a little bit of everything here and there?
2) If I have a CISCO CCNA Certification (alone w/o an Associate's Degree), what are the chances that I'll get a job? Note that I have not done an Internship, and has no work-experience.
3) Similar to the 2nd question, what are the chances that I will get a job ALONG with an Associate's Degree?
4) When I start out, will I be doing Help Desk work, or maybe some minor Administration work? I'm rather curious.
5) If I major in Computer Science, when I graduate, what will I be doing? Will it be pretty much everything? Or more along the lines of a Server Administrator?
