So yeah, I've been wondering lately what I should choose between. I'm not playing games on the computer, just surfing web and working with programming, (physics and numeric mathematics for those who're interested in what I'm working with). What would be the best, OS X or Win XP? I'm quite a tweak-whore as well, so I'd like to ask for what's faster and what's better.

I'd not like anyone to answer to this topic unless they have tested both. Thanks.

Macs are nice for just doing stuff with. Windows still wins the gaming market though. Unless you are able to get a Mac with like 1TB of hard drive and like 16millionG RAM, the only games you'll be playing are ones that can actually run on Mac format.

So, therefore, a Mac would be better in your instance. Though I do not/ have not done any programming on a mac, I can't give you an answer about that.

Hi, I've used a Macbook for school things for 2 years (Rented), and I've had XP for god knows how long.

For what you're interested in XP would be better for you. Besides, you can't upgrade a mac unless you pick a stock option and send it back to be upgraded, and even then you need the top tier to get a good processor and enough RAM.
I could go on, but trust me. XP is much more suited to your needs.

If you want to test it yourself and have the spare $$$ get a Macbook and then install XP onto it.

If you don't want to spend 2k+ and want the same or better performance get a windows PC.

Nothing will be better to code on than a linux OS.

Linux is always faster than the other OS's with the same specs. (except booting up, but only by 20 seconds at most)

Linux enjoys being tweaked.

If you can iron out the bugs you might have with a manufactured model, it's the best. Of course, you could see what hardware is supported and make a PC yourself so you don't have to find out what you have to fix later on.

Okay, ur. I meant Macbook/Mac-laptop or whatever it's named. Not a mac desktop :x Same goes for laptop, but I assume most people understood that.

Everything i said applies to both laptops and desktops, except for the "build it yourself to save trouble" thing since building a laptop from scratch would be a lot more trouble than just buying a premade one and ironing out the bugs. xD

Okay. No Linux for me. :X

Linux is great and all, but I'd give it a few more years for everything to be more cross-platform before making the switch. It's just too much stuff to learn and tinker with for the average person.

The picture was an example.

Anyway, I was going to suggest Linux as well, but I had a feeling you wouldn't be down with the setting it up. XTOTHEL and my point still stands however, you will get more bang for you buck if you get a Windows based Laptop, but finding one without Vista is pretty hard.

OR you can do what I'm doing with a PC I plan on building: Wait for Windows 7. (It's planned to launch in 2009; planned being the key word there.)

WHHHAATTTT!!!!!Mad
Everyone doesn't love VISTA!!
They have commercials telling me how its not really crappy and that I should give it a second chance so it can fail again!
...
Come on- Vista explained to me how most 3rd party software REFUSES to allow Vista to work-
And not vice versa.Glitter

I've used Macs at school for programming and it was fine (because I could build gcc and g++, unlike on Windows where you're stuck with MingW or VC2003/5/8). But otherwise I prefer XP vastly over Mac (gaming, drawing, writing, homework), and I've heard Asus is a good brand for laptops. :o

As for Vista:To be honest people complained when Mac OS X (and XP) were released because they had a lot more of an over head and incompatibilities with previous operating systems. But I'm sure you're tech savvy enough to know how to install XP.

Nooo, i was saying that you can build it yourself so driver difficulty doesn't arise. It's not that common (mostly around wireless cards) but it's not necessary for you to build one at all.

Dual booting isn't that hard either.

He codes, so i wouldn't consider him average exactly. O_o

@ windows 7 point: That's a possibility too, but i wouldn't exactly put your life savings on it at the same time. All windows products are horrible in the beginning and take quite a lot of time to make it a successful operating system. Sometimes it might not even happen at all. *Cough*VISTA*cough* Don't take microsofts "oh it's lighter and more advanced! *kicks vista in the wastebin*" because i distinctly remember them saying something similar before vista came out.

Ubuntu is a good Linux distribution from what I hear. (I hate Richard Stallman)

kleptophobia Wrote:Ubuntu is a good Linux distribution from what I hear. (I hate Richard Stallman)

Yeah, it's the most popular in the states. 7.10 what i run too. I don't see any reason to hate stallman though. O_o

Mac or laptop? - kleptophobia - 2008-12-02

Summary of Stallman: You can't just call it Linux, that is just the kernal! We need more recognition for the FSF and GNU!

He makes it political, what a tard.

Well that was implied. <_<
Windows products need to be aged like cheese.
Also, Vista isn't a complete failure, no matter what the hivemind thinks.

Why would I ever want two OS on a comp, really? :X

Thing is, I won't do stuff that's certainly not worth it. Time-wise.

It's not a complete failure, but it's by no means a success. The light speed development start of windows 7 is (somewhat) proof of that.

I can't help but think of how awesome ready boost would be if i had it though. xD

Scenario: Your windows partition gets bogged down by spyware big time. You can't boot into it or what have you. You have a big deadline to make/work to save. The average person would call fail squad to fix it, but an ubuntu user can simply boot into it and access their windows partition through there. Grab all your work, and you're saved.

That's a rare case though, but it's still a nice convenience sometimes. I only use my XP partition nowadays to play games and update/sync my iphone. Amarok is complete sex in a media player.

Not really trying to force you or anything, just suggestions. xD I can't say that my time installing (and by installing i mean working out my wireless card driver issues) linux wasn't enjoyable in the end though. Feeling of a job well done. :3
