So I've been watching Aquarion - IllegallySane - 2012-09-28 IT SURE IS STRANGE. FANSERVICE AND INNEUNDOS EVERYWHERE. I appreciate the mecha having an awesome punch move, as well as borrowing the combination idea from Getter Robo. The opening song is also oh so very catchy. But the storyline is just... 12,000 years old reincarnated people, super robots from the heavens (supposedly). Tons of surrealism in the forms of psychological warfare. And then the dialogue EVERYTIME THEY COMBINE SHIPS INTO AQUARION. I swear the dialogue, if taken out of context, wouldn't be too out of place in a porno. SO YOU HAVE A MECHA THAT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOu'RE HAVING SEX EVERYTIME YOU GOT TO COMBINE TO WIN. WUT. On top of the fanservice and ho-yay and perverted sounding dialogue, it's so hard to see it as a badass mecha anime like Getter Robo/Gurren Lagann/Gaogaigar. It's bother comically light hearted and mind-screwy.
