Black Mesa is a total remake of Half-Life: Source from the ground up, from textures to lighting to voice acting. The only thing that doesn't change is the storyline.
Just compare these two vids to see how big of a difference. Top is original HL:Source and the bottom is Black Mesa:

Really? I remember them saying you only need some Source Engine from Valve that you can download totally for free... Need to check again.
