Computer Dilemma... - Ahmed - 2008-11-24
Spoiler
Okay, I'll make this short and sweet. I'm thinking of buying a new computer this Black Friday from Best Buy, and I've narrowed my selection to two computers, a desktop and a laptop. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, and I'm a bit stuck here. Here they are: HP A6614F Desktop PC AMD Phenom X4 Quad-Core Processor 6GB DDR2 RAM 640GB HDD 21.6" LCD monitor Canon Printer $600 Pros: -It's not a door-buster, so I don't have to wait as early outside in the cold -Very nice specs for the price -The monitor is especially appealing -Desktops are easier to upgrade and will likely last longer than a laptop Cons: -I'm going to be going to college next year and a laptop would certainly be helpful, as I'll be commuting -Pricier than the laptop Toshiba L305D-S5893 Laptop PC AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Processor 4GB DDR2 RAM 250GB HDD 15.4" screen Also comes w/ a sleeve, wired mouse, anti-virus software $480 Pros: -Great price for the specs + it's a Toshiba -It's portable, great for college use and what not -Cheaper than the desktop Cons: -It's a door-buster item, meaning I'd have to camp out way early to even have a chance at getting my grubby hands on it -After a little Google search for reviews, it seems Best Buy sold this PC before, and it had 2 reviews. One was bad (seemed credible) and one was good (sounded like a teen-aged girl that just used it for MySpace). -Laptops aren't as easily upgradeable/fixable as desktops (in terms of CD drives, hard drive capacity, video/sound cards, etc.) So, what do I do? D; Computer Dilemma... - Fiel - 2008-11-24 Desktop --> Better specs --> Better upgradability so your $600 investment will last longer --> Printer included, you will need a printer at college. Buying the laptop will require you buying a printer. --> Hewlett Packard is an excellent brand Computer Dilemma... - Corn - 2008-11-24 Fiel Wrote:Desktop Going to be quite a hassel moving the desktop to the campus, though. In my opinion, it really depends how much you use the computer. If you're just a Maplestory user...eh...the laptop. If you like running stuff like IRC, Maplestory, 99394138095 tabs open, some music, etc. etc, the desktop. Even if you run about 3 programs at a time, the laptop should do fine with its 4 GB RAM, though. Computer Dilemma... - XTOTHEL - 2008-11-24 If I HAVE to make a choice, the laptop would be the better IMO. Once you're in college, you're going to want a laptop to take advantage of on campus wireless, a desktop computer also limits portability. You might want to bring the laptop to class (might be a bad thing) or to study sessions. To be real honest, both PCs use AMD processors. I think AMD processors are fail atm. Intel just beats them hands down. But the Desktop does look like a good deal. The monitor alone is around 190-220 alone. But boo to Phenom. If it would be possible, wait until boxing day and snatch a decent intel core 2 dual laptop from Toshiba for about 1k. Here are some Circuit City Black Friday sales:

Computer Dilemma... - Ahmed - 2008-11-25 The polls, as well as myself, are leaning towards the desktop... hmm. :O Computer Dilemma... - KajitiSouls - 2008-11-25 Desktop. Unless you absolutely need the laptop for your commuting. Using it for note-taking DOES NOT COUNT!!!! Desktops also allow for more interchanging of parts and whatnot, in case something fails like LOLeMachineLOL's power supply -_- Computer Dilemma... - XTOTHEL - 2008-11-25 Ahmed Wrote:The polls, as well as myself, are leaning towards the desktop... hmm. :Oonly 8 people voted F3 I still say spend a bit more money and get a laptop. Life is so much better with a laptop on campus. A LOT better. The free printer wouldn't be a steal unless it is a laser. If it isn't, just forget it. The monitor might be a brand you've never heard of, won't be the best quality either. Computer Dilemma... - Ahmed - 2008-11-26 XTOTHEL Wrote:only 8 people voted F3 It's an HP Monitor xd. And like.. I won't be on campus alot. Just for classes and studying. Otherwise I'll be home, cus I'm commuting anyways. So... Idno. Personally, I think I like the desktop better, too.
