ARAM game mode next patch - Dark Link - 2012-06-08

A little over a month ago, a number of developers and I participated in Riot’s first ever Thunderdome – a periodic, companywide event aimed at allowing developers to work on whatever they want. My team set out to make the Proving Grounds, our basic tutorial map, playable as full on 5v5. This is something I’ve wanted to do ever since I originally worked on the map, and with the help of some other devs (and a good bit of caffeine) we managed to get everything up and running. Everyone was pretty happy with how the effort turned out, and with the upcoming removal of Winter Summoner’s Rift we saw an opportunity to sneak the new map out by repurposing the same UI hooks.

In the next patch, the Proving Grounds map will be selectable in custom games. While we’ve been playtesting it internally as All Random (and lovin’ it) for quite some time now, all the pick options will be available – Blind Pick, Draft, and All Random – because we’re excited to see what variation you enjoy the most. We’d love to hear any feedback that you may have, as both RiotNome and myself will be providing support post release. Check it out and let us know what you think!

EDIT: Key points to note:
  • It's not 100% Proving Grounds, the map has been edited slightly.
  • Gold gain is somewhere between SR and Dom. (Somewhere around GP/5)
  • Recalling is disabled.
  • GA and stacking items are disabled.
  • Revive and Promote are disabled.
  • They are planning to add a "draft random" pick that lets you ban champs. "The trick will be securing the resources to do so, but I'll be trying to bribe a few people with donuts over the next two weeks."
  • "I have some ideas that we might be able to do [regarding dodgers] in the short term."
  • You cannot shop or heal if you walk back to base. (This is slightly different to the normal ARAM rules, where you are allowed to do so if your inhibitor is down.)

Wouldn't be sure. Jayce is a male name, and the 100th champ is confirmed to be female, larger than a breadbox, smaller than a barn, and not have massive breasts.

Does anyone know the rationale behind banning GA? I can understand every other rule to a degree, but why GA would be overpowered with this setup is beyond me. I really hope this isn't the new game mode supremacy though, as I find its added value to be a bit lacking then. Going to go play the tutorial now just to see how proving grounds exactly was again, hehe.

Proving grounds is just a map with 1 lane, which is what ARAM is supposed to simulate. A GA is OP because after a team fight, a lot of times the winning side is low HP while the losing side got aced. If someone got a GA, then it's possible for them to 1v5 them. It's the same reasoning revive is banned.

You can think of a GA as being 1/3 a revive.

Sad I didn't know!

It'll be pretty cool if they do this right and it gets finished. Maybe they'll do an ARAB variant one day.

GA turns the game into a 6v5
Also, this isn't "Supremacy".

Apparently this map its supposed to be a mix of stuff in Crystal Scar and Summoner Rift, minus the towers from crystal scars and score from there too, something about passive exp and gold gain similar to crystal scar (Albeit a little less), and health packs in that map.

Just played my first ARAM match with my best character, Teemo. We won. I have to say, this mode is insanely fun. The passive gold gain is nice, along with the headstart 1375 gold and level 3. Unfortunately, there isn't too much strategy involved (push a single lane) and when we get an advantage, it seems like you keep it (making games much harder to come back from, but much shorter). This is definitely going to be a favorite when it actually releases.
