Sound acting strange - DrRusty - 2011-11-21
Don't know what exactly is going on. I can hear everything normally - youtube videos, game noises, and other misc windows sounds. The only thing I can not hear are other people talking to me on vent and skype. They can hear me just fine. I've tried messing with my sound settings and googling a solution but I can't fix the problem. I've also rebooted my computer. Last week I was raiding and vent was working fine. I just found out about this problem about an hour ago.

What OS are you using? Make sure your specific sound settings on your ventrilo client aren't muted. Check your wire on your headset if you're using one. Is it frayed anywhere? Is there a "mute sound" switch anywhere on the headset? Is your ventrilo's inbound device set to your headset/speakers?

They're not muted. I haven't used vent since last week and it was working just fine

there is a mute button but it's definitely not clicked. I can hear EVERYTHING else. I just can't hear skype/vent

Try opening your volume mixer and seeing if vent or skype are muted / the volume bars are all the way down. Though from what you said I'm guessing they're not.
Another thing, is vent/skype muted ONLY for your headset? See if you can hear them through your actual speakers or not.

When you're checking in your sound mixer, is the headset put as your primary sound device? You might only be seeing the sound mixer settings for your speakers, if that is set to your primary sound device.

It's not in volume mixer, it's in your "playback devices" menu. Right click the little sound icon and click that. Then choose your headset as the primary or "default" sound device. See if Vent/skype are muted in your volume mixer settings then.

yah I've changed that. It was speakers before and while I was messing with it I changed it to headset. They're not muted in volume mixer settings for sure. For skype, I can hear the logging in and logging out chime it makes.

What in blazes...I honestly have no idea what it could be then. I've run out of ideas. Only thing I can think of is you for some strange reason have each individual person's volume ludicrously low on vent or skype or something.

I know dude lol. I've googled like 5 different things and messed with it for 45 minutes before I made this thread. I'm on skype with 2 other people. They can hear each other AND me, I just can't hear them on skype or vent.
I even asked them if they were fking with me lol but that's not it.
Edit- I fixed it. Just said fk it and did a system restore
