I'm a little confused as to this issue from the little research I've been able to scrounge up on the topic. If I'm to understand this, all employers are required to pay for Sick Leave? And if so, what are the requirements for an employee to just call in sick? Must he have a written note from the doctor? Does the note have to specify that it excuses the employee for the entire day, or just the duration of the visit?
I'm curious because I watched my boss hand out a letter of probation to an employee today because he simply came in with a note from his doctor after missing work yesterday (he has some known health issues as of late). I want to make sure that what he is doing isn't illegal or going to end up in a lawsuit, because it just seems so wrong to me.

Well, there could be a number of things. The problem is that you're providing a document showing that employees state wise are entitled to sick leave, but you aren't looking at your own company guide lines. I know for my work you have to at least call in to inform why you aren't attending, and you have to have enough sick leave from the get go anyway. It could also be the doctors note isn't sufficient, as in it's just a signature or something that could be fraudulent.

Start at the Federal Level to determine your baseline requirements;
