I have to write an essay for my UCSD housing application. Seeing as NZ doesn't follow this awful procedure, I don't know how long to make it! To top things off there is no word limit to guide me! How long are these things usually?

That unit of measure helps no one. How long is a page? I have big writing, a page for me would be about 3/4 of a page for someone else. If you're typing it, a page in 12 point font or 16?

A page, typed. 11 or 12 point font. Default margins, etc. You don't want to overdo it but you don't want to seem lazy or boring either. Be creative, they're giving you free roam for that purpose.
Alternatively you could just write until you're satisfied and have no more to add.
