So I'm looking into finally getting on the iPhone bandwagon sometime soon, but I have a few questions before hand.
For one thing, I don't really follow all the iPhone 5 news and rumors so I'm not sure what people are speculating about its announcement or possible release date. I mean I don't wanna end up getting the 4th gen only to have gen 5 come out 2 months later.
Another thing I'm not sure about is which provider to go with. In a perfect world I'd get the iPhone but stick to my trusty Tmobile service... but it's a far from perfect world. I'm leaning more towards AT&T because from what I've seen they have a greater variety of plans, plus rollover minutes are really appealing to me since there are months I can go making like 3 calls. What I'm concerned about is coverage, being that I live in NYC it's never a huge problem but I'd had a lot of friends complain to me about both Verizon and AT&T service, meanwhile I myself never had either.
Thanks for any advice or insight you can offer.

Sprint is joining the iphone provider fray when gen 5 comes out so either way you're going to want to wait for that.

I used to be with Sprint and their cell service was always great, too bad their customer service was garbage and they charged up the ass for extra features...

Where I live (northern NJ), I get better data service in general with Verizon than with AT&T. Everyone at my company is required to have an iPhone and there are two options: Use a company-issued iPhone that belongs to the company, or use your own and get reimbursed $70 a month. I bought my own Verizon iPhone after about a month of using a company-issued phone because it would cost me less than $70 a month. I surf the web on my phone on my commute on the train, so I've had experience with both. Both have some dead spots and areas where service is poor, but I recall there being many more with AT&T.

I've been following the rumor mill intensely because I'm getting an iPhone ASAP, and feel, like you, that I'll wait to get a better model if it comes out soon.

Which it is. The most recent rumor is that the iPhone 5 is coming mid-October. Speculation in general puts it somewhere between October 7-15. The rumors also say the iPhone 5 won't be drastically different from the iPhone 4, with the biggest changes being the A5-duo core processor (? if I got that right; it's the current processor powering the iPad 2, which is pretty sweet to think about it in an iPhone), and a supposed 8 megapixel camera (current is 5; 8 would rival point and shoots).

Personally, I feel it's worth it to wait. If you're like me and will use the phone intensely, then the iPhone 5 will obviously be better for performance means. If you just want an iPhone and don't care about little changes, then, like said earlier, still wait till the iPhone 5 is released because every single time Apple has released a new iPhone they've simultaneously lowered the price on the previous model.

That sounds great, that way I can make it my xmas present to myself and not feel guilty.
The 8megapixel camera is very tantalizing for sure, specially since I already take a lot of pictures with my phone's camera despite the not so great quality.
Being a girl though another major selling point for me would be any changes in appearance, because I have to say looks-wise I like the 3rd gen over the 4th gen. The iPhone 4 is so boxy, so if they new one were to be a little more curvy that would be great.
As for the "A5-duo core processor" that doesn't tell me much, I mean I get that it's clearly faster than whatever the iPhone 4 has but an iPhone isn't a computer I don't see it having huge processing issues. Unless of course the 5th gen were able to multitask more that would be amazing. I really hate how you can't switch between apps w/o exiting one and opening the other. Iirc the iPad switches between apps more smoothly, if that were implemented that would also be really sweet.

1) Performance is EVERYTHING on a (i)Phone. I don't care if you don't care about performance, when you get one, you will learn to care. Most of the things people whine about with previous gen phones get ironed out extremely fast. The last real problem was the fact that you couldn't get from the lock screen to the camera fast enough to take a picture of something happening in real time both because it lacked performance and because doing that involved 2-4 steps that all have an extremely considerable load time. New phone will have like 3x the speed and the camera button RIGHT ON the lock screen, so this was solved.

What remains as a major problem imo is just that the video recorder is TERRIBLE. Mostly in quality. 8 megapixels will probably change that a lot though.

2) You can multi task on iphones since the 3rd generation. Double click home button.

Well it's a bit rounder on the edges so that's nice. And a larger screen... but somehow I don't think it'll fit in my back pocket.

really? I like my phones to be bulky, mostly because I have big hands, but also because they feel sturdy. I am tired of all of these tiny phones!(tiny devices in general)

But like I said the screen looks bigger so that's a plus for all the sausage fingers out there.

Ah Sprint... they are really trying to dominate that "unlimited 100$ a month" thing.
Well like I said I used to be with Sprint and although their customer service was TERRIBLE their cell service never failed me. Though I wonder how "unlimited" this plan really is... I know T-mobile and AT&T have those "unlimited until a certain amount of GB and then we make your internet slow as hell" plan, and some other places say "unlimited" but in the fine print there is still a limitation at like 15GB or something.
They need to release pictures and details already!!!

I don't know if them being the only ones with an unlimited plan will be true for long though. Verizon and AT&T could just be greedy for a few months longer but meh. An unlimited plan might cost both companies too much since i know they have those mifi hotspot things that give their network to 5 wifi enabled devices so that's potentially a f'uck ton of data. I dunno if sprint has one of those things though. If so i kind of want one...probably has a damn contract.

To the best of my knowledge Sprint doesn't offer that hotspot thing for phones. Also on the site you linked to there was another article talking about how T-mobile might also carry the iPhone 5. That might be something worth looking into since T-mobile offers a lot of pay-as-you-go and non-contract plans.

No hate, but why would you want a phone that:
- Is so poor quality that it breaks the first time it hits the floor.
- Cannot be used for phone calls if you hold it in your hand the "wrong way"
- Costs way too much considering how bad it is compared to some other phones

So yah, why not buy an android?

-A lot of phones do that. Some of my friends drop their non-iphones and go through 5 phones a year. I've dropped mine on concrete many times and its never broke.
-The right way is the natural way...
-I assume you can elaborate on "how bad" it is.
