Well, that's to make it "simpler", plus it's a pretty start interface, and it's supposed to be customizable...
AND, you can use the old interface, that's pretty much the same as Windows 7, so it's okay.
Though, yeah, sticking with Windows 7 until there's a pretty good and useful improvement unveiled.

That interface IS mainly aimed at PCs with touch input/for entertainment (you should try actually reading more about it before bashing it), you shouldn't just judge it from a keyboard/mouse point of view. For other work and business related work, there's the "pro" interface.

If I can mod it, then I don't care. The 1st screen shot doesn't bother me much, I kind of like the tile icons so long as I can edit the background and size and placement. The rest though, if I can't edit how big those buttons are and what shows then I will be ultimately pissed. Also, I think that onscreen keyboard for touch interface computers looks pretty neat.

Well, I like the new Copy information Window. My one question is: What about Classic, is that still available? I don't like of that overly flashy "hey, look at me, I am am unique!" that every UI tries to be, I want it to be logical, simple, and working.

Look at 8:55, pretty nice. 15:28 for laptop action (look for fail drag a few seconds in). He didn't use a mouse/keyboard combination for the desktop though. Heh.
In action it looks better, for touch-screen devices. I really don't see any use for all that fancyness as a no-app laptop user. I would've liked a new "re-imagined" file and folders navigation system instead, but eh.

Oh btw, I can't wait to clean my new 800 dollar 26" 120hz touch screen screen every day in 2013 because it gets so dirty with finger print stains... all the time...
But yeah, the longer I look at it:
- The more seasick I get (no really I did), too much non-info, presented to you in the most chaotic crap form...
- The more I get the idea of "Hey we made something new because we couldn't invent anything else to improve".
- The more I get the idea of "Hey buy all new apps, in our new store, no really buy them, now! Comon, buy, buy, buy! All new and improved! Hey did you buy that new app already? Oh, you have an old win7 application that does it better and it's free? Well, but remember it's not Win8 compatible because it's not a tile! So it sux! Buy the new one! Do it now!!!
No really, using this UI for a desktop is pure bullcrap...

As someone who developed for years on monochrome text-only terminals, and moved to graphic workstations only to fill up the screen with terminal windows (what Windows calls "cmd"), I have to tell you Windows was "noobified" from day 1. (And of course was copied from the original Macintosh, which was designed to make computers accessible to laymen, so yeah, noobs ft$).
Making an (optional, right?) interface that is similar to handheld devices, so people can interact the same with all their gadgets, isn't that horrible of an idea. However, obviously, working at a desk and keeping your arm raised to the screen is not exactly comfortable. We'll see how this plays out.

But I can't really see how you can turn this win8 candy store into a high-tech terminal... :/
Anyway my prediction:
- Microsoft will launch this as "The new big thing since Windows 95".
- Lots of (noob) people will buy this "because it's pretty and it looks like their phone".
- After a few months people and businesses will start complaining because it's unworkable and counterproductive.
- Microsoft implements an option to get rid of the new UI totally -OR- there will come a tool that will allow you to De-noobify Windows again.
- If not, this will become their Windows Vista 2.0 all over again...
P.S. I also sense a golden opportunity for Lunix GUI, Chrome OS, MacOS, etc to take over Microsoft's dominating position on the desktop market. Especially in business environments.
