Should I ditch my mage? - Moonlapse - 2008-10-23

Well I just learned that Archmages are useless for bossing, and that it will be pretty much impossible for me to get into any boss run that is higher than Papulautus (and probably not even pap). I really want to boss (that has been my main motivation for training) when I get to 100. But now it seems that since I am interested in bossing, I've pretty much hit a dead end. So I am STRONGLY considering quitting my mage and making a gunslinger instead.

What do you guys think?

Well if bossing's your thing and ultimates aren't, then I'd say go on ahead.

But think about why you chose I/L in the first place and what motivated you to train to level 81. Anything you were aiming for, that you're close to achieving and won't be able to if you quit now?

Also... quitting doesn't have to be final, unless you don't have enough character space. You can just make a gunslinger and leave the mage, so you can play it if you feel like it.

If you love playing your mage, then keep playing with it.

If bossing is what you care about the most, then you should switch to a character more suitable for bossing.

I think that you should stay with your mage, since you've come so far already with it.

well i wouldnt quit an 8x mage
think about all the time you put into it
you will be able to boss as an arch mage with CL
my friend has helped with many zak runs as a 13x i/l arch mage

if you want to make a gunslinger you can always do just that and go back to the amge once you're bored with it

Not useless. Less useful. Many many archmages (archmage meaning 12x and 13x+) can solo pap so you have no pap worries. The problem is, if you quit a mage, can you level another character to 8x, 9x, 10x? Because nothing can train as fast as a magician character. 1st job, magic claw's built in mastery made them fastest. 2nd job is debatable but they're definitely not slowest. 3rd job, and 4th job, the magician wins in terms of leveling speed.

If you make another character and can grow to a bossing level (12x+), sure go for it.

If you really want to be asked to come to bosses (rather than begging the host that you can tag along) then you probably should switch job...

All characters can get into boss runs, not all of them are there because they do anything useful.

Honestly 2nd job takes so little time now, you can start almost any class and with the right funding and knowledge (you have a Zakum helm so I'm assuming you have at least some connections/money) get to 3rd job pretty fast.

I dunno how right the switch to Gunslinger is, I've never really heard them described as a good boss class but I don't pay much attention to the pirate jobs. >_>

Well, if bossing is your thing, just like me, make an archer. If you like trainning and other stuff. Arch mages are fine, and fun. Don't just quit a high lvled character like that.

Also it brings up the point that even if you're gMS' most powerful hero/NL/BM/whatever, you're not guaranteed to find boss runs. You still need to know the right people who will let you come along.

Of course, being things like bishops/DKs, you have a higher chance of being able to going with strangers. Still doesn't guarantee though.

Make a bishop =o

Should I ditch my mage? - Erich - 2008-10-23

Please. You can go at any level later to any boss runs, because youre more powerful. so train, and then go back to bossing at later levels.and what butterfli said is good.

LESS USEFULL/

I got tired of spamming ultimates, and quit my bishop for my shadower. Shadowers are pretty underated in terms of bossing capabilities, but I've always loved bandits and I like being the underdog. Shadowers can dish out damage as fast as any other class if they're played the correct way. Using savage blow (2nd job skill) against SoA, Brandish, TT, yah you're gonna get outdamage Tongue.

I ditched my bishop for another class. If you have the time/funds to make another char, then go for it.

I once watched my high lv I/L AM friend killing BF with Chain lightening...
It's not bad dmg, kinda made me want to train my I/L again...

I was wondering the same thing before, and now I have decided to make AM and Bish at the same time with my bf ^__^

Yeah CL is strong and fast making it the best 1v1 for i/l. Just don't compare it to triple throw, or hurricane or something and you're good.

Yeah, My roomate is Stoked about pirates and wants to get into Maple again when they come out. So me and him will probably both start over (he has a level 57 cleric) with me making a Gunslinger and him making an Infighter. I can afford alot of 2x Cards, so I think I can get my new char to third in about a month

Btw, I'm still keeping my mage because mages are sexy ;o

You have to decide what's more valuable to you. In my opinion, bossing is not as important as training. That is, you get splits and into loot order for stuff like Bliz 30, but ultimately you spend most of your time grinding. In 4th job any mage can train very fast, faster than anyone else. Also, you're not as heavily dependent on gear as other characters, and you can train effectively without "godly" stuffs.

Also I might add that at like 17x, you'll get into boss parties anyway. Getting to 17x as an i/l will be easier than with a bowman or thief.

Two years ago I quit my lvl 74 I/L Mage for my Shadower, can't say I ever regret that choice... Dispell + Magic Guard = One of many Nexon's epic phails in game design...

The chance of getting 1 hit killed -WITH FULL HP- by something below your level = plain retarded... They should have made Magic Guard non-dispelable... Mages just have too few HP for that...

Dispel was one of the fun things about being a magician. It gives a challenge. I've tried playing a hero at pap before and all I did was brandish and pot since stance took care of everything. It wasn't really fun to me.

Like static AoE spamming for months in a row to lvlup a few lvls isn't boring? Wink

Just face it, only Shadowers are actually -fun- to play when it comes to bossing like that, all other classes do is remain still, press the attack button button, repot and gain exp/drops on papu.

And I never understood the fun in dispell for magicians when you get 1 hit killed and have to restart the entire boss fight... :o
Like: Wheeeee, hahahaha, I got 1 hit killed, look how much fun I have!

Yeah I'm glad I quit ny I/L Mage...

Edit: Dispell would have been more fun if it was implemented like it was on Manon and Griffey, where you are immune to attacks for a short time after you get dispelled, since you only can get dispelled when you get hit with a magic attack. I think they should re-make Papu, Pia, Shark, Horntail dispell so that I becomes the same like Manon and Griffey dispell. It would save you from the 1hit kill dispell touches.

ahh but devil your forgetting nexon likes money, and geuss what high lvl people use when they die?

Safety charms mah man. You see if we didnt have full altars of people dying at zakum nexon wouldn't get as much money no?

(ps not trying to hijack the thread but how many points did you put into hp?[directed ar devil])
