Ok guys, seriously
It's summertime and since I quit my last (and first) job a few months ago, I've been looking for the right job that will last me at least for two or three years. A guy that I know somewhat heard that I was looking for a job and is hooking me up. Basically I'll be working at an upholstery shop, and I'll be their b'itch. Well, only a day or two out of each week, and the rest of the time I'll be learning the upholstery business and will be making a very nice hourly pay as an 18-year-old.
I'm excited to work here because it's so close to home and I need a steady job so I can get a loan for a motorcycle, but I am terrified of one particular thing that will come with working here. I have to mow the lawn.
I was very straightforward with the guy that offered the job to me; "I don't know anything about this kind of work" is what I said to him. He said not to worry about it, and that he started off knowing nothing as well and learned most of what he needed to know in the first couple of weeks. They aren't going to expect me to know anything about upholstery, but I'm going to be very embarassed to say that I've never mowed a lawn in my life (I've been living on two acres of land all my life and we've had people hired to mow it for us for as long as I can remember). The worst part is, when I asked the guy about the kind of work I would be doing, he said the absolute worst part of the job is mowing the lawn, particularly because of a very wide ditch that can only be conquered via push-mower. I don't know, I haven't seen anything yet, but he made it sound pretty annoying. Aside from that ditch, he said the rest of the lawn can be taken care of on a riding mower, which can't be that hard. Regardless, I've never used either and I really don't want to make a fool out of myself.
So help me, Southperry. Describe to me in words how to mow a lawn properly. Things to avoid, things to make sure of, etc. For both push-mower and the ones that you ride. I start on the 21st.

I just turned 19 and had to start mowing the lawn as well because my brother was the one who usually did it but he isn't home to do it now.
First off make sure you have enough gasoline in it so it'll last for the job. If the grass is really long it can clog the mower and stop it completely (this happened to me like 3 times the first time I did it).
If you feel the mower is clogging lift the front up a bit and also mow in halves. As in, half of what you mow is uncut grass and the other half is already cut, to alleviate the amount of grass going through the mower at once (I hope that made sense).
If the lawn mower clogs and stops completely, get it off the grass and lift the front up and then lift the back up and hopefully some of the grass clog falls out. As Sarah said don't ever put your hand underneath because you can cut yourself on the blades.
That's all I can think of for now. The most annoying part for me is pulling the cord to start it because if it fails and won't start I feel like I look like a complete moron repeatedly pulling the cord...

I'm nervous that there is some kind of art to mowing the lawn and that I'm just going to do an awful job my first couple of times just because I've never done it. Is there honestly more to it that just starting the mower and pushing it over tall grass?

Try to mown the lawn when the grass is dry so it doesn't block the blades and f'ucks everything up. Ask your superiors for help if you can't get the thing started.

Lawn mowing is the devil's chore, honestly. It is really hard work that you get no real gratitude for, and are likely to get heat stroke from. JoeTang is right in that you need technique to make it look good, because it's so easy to miss spots.

It's different from mower to mower, but there's generally a pattern that you follow throughout the lawn. Usually it's a criss-cross pattern going back and forth over the lawn - side to side.
For mowing the lawn, there are generally a few different things you have to do:
1. Prepare the lawn - Remove any sticks or branches in the way. Clean up any fecal matter or things which would dull the blades under the mower.
2. Mow the lawn - Use the riding mower or the pushmower, whatever you have to do it.
3. Trim it - A weed trimmer is necessary to trim the grass in places that a lawnmower cannot reach very well. This includes areas next to stumps and gardening decor.
4. Clean up - You need to bag all of the grass you just mowed because you don't want to leave clippings all over the lawn. The clippings, if left there and not blown away by the wind (can happen after a storm with wet grass) will kill the grass underneath causing yellow patches on the grass which does not look attractive.

Oh, another thing. If you know you are going to mow the lawn make sure to be wearing really old or worn out shoes. Walking through the grass will stain your shoes and, depending on the depth of the grass, your socks as well. Not to mention there's always that chance you miss a pile of dung in your initial sweep. It's possible to remove the stains using soapy water but it takes some elbow grease. It's best just to stick with a dedicated pair of shoes for yard work.
