okay, here's what you need to do if you're going to set up a charitable donation fund.
the first thing you need to do is talk to a bank about setting it up. that way it's a legit fund. all money would be given to the bank, deposited straight into the fund's account. that way you're not really handling donations, the bank is. that oughta pretty much remove the sketch factor. now then, once you have all the information from the bank that a donator might want, start spreading the word. email/call news stations. put a post on craigslist or reddit. make a short youtube video. talk to churches and see if they can spread the word to their congregations. get empty coffee cans and put a sign on it with a small amount of information regarding the circumstances surrounding the fund. maybe talk to principals of schools about asking for donations. try getting pictures of the family too. do you know how hard it is to not donate when someone shows you a picture of the affected family?
granted, all this is going to take a while, but at least you'd be able to reimburse the family some.
