I need help working on a resume - Rob - 2011-05-31
So, I'm doing a Work and Travel program later this year, and I'm going to the USA. I need to work on a resume, but the template I was given is... a bit silly. Does anyone have a resume of their own that I can take a look at?
Also, how do degrees over there work? I want to put in my resume than I'm currently pursuing a Law degree but I don't know what it is. A major? A Bachelor's?
I already have data somewhat organized in a Curriculum Vitae in Spanish, but the display sure is a lot different.

Well, I don't know what the reality is, but as far as my effort goes, the objective is to tailor a résumé that talks for who you are; less bullsh'itting, that translates into "portraying what you do best at".
If you have a fantastic academic record, you'd want to highlight that, if you'd had a lot of experience in the labor force, you'd want them to know, if you have a lot of miscellaneous (but relevant) skills, like us nerds knowing how to mess with Microsoft Office and having high typing speeds, you'd also want to make it stand out. So I don't know if a template is going to do you any good, since what you excel at might not happen to be the focus of that template at all.
That said, I haven't successfully obtained any job (not that I've tried to, but yeah, doesn't matter) so take this with a grain of salt, if you haven't already known it.

For the degree part, I would put
"X credits completed towards (insert degree here)"
My resume template is as follows (this has no formatting but my original does)

Name
Address
Phone (home + cell)
(Insert job I'm applying for)
Career goal
(insert what I want to do/what job i'm looking for)
Personal strong points
(Insert what I'm particularly good at that the company is looking for)
Education (My education is listed before work experience because i'm newly graduated and don't have much work experience. If you have it the other way around, put work experience first)
(Insert school + location)
(Insert degree + time of completion)
Key skills (I broke mine into 2 subsets of general skills + computer skills)
(insert skills in bullet form)
Work experience
(Insert name of place, location, what you accomplished there, and from when-when you worked)

Speaking as an employeer that makes hiring decsions, the above format is good. Also try your hardest to keep the resume to one page in length. There is nothing worse than a wordy resume.
