In terms of pure numbers, we do spend a lot. New weapons systems, health care to veterans, etc
In terms of how much GDP of the United States is dedicated to military spending, its not a big chunk of the pie.
It really depends on how you look at it.

Same goes for India's GDP who will take over China as largest country of the world within the next 20 years, both economically and in pure inhabitants numbers.
Wild guess, largest armies of the world in 2050:
- India
- China
- European Defense Force (When Russia joins European Union)
- North American Army (USA + Canada + Mexico)
And then, around 2150, we will have the Earth Defense Force... :+)

Russia will never join the euro union. They pretty much disagree with anything the western world proposes, they back dictators even more than we do.
We need to be armed. We have a right to. And you know as soon as we start disarming someone is going to try and put Uncle Sam six feet under. Especially when we're pretty much funding China's army by giving them money for products.
Useful things come out of weapon devs, too. Our technology would not be the same without them.

Defense spending is approximately 1/3 of USA's yearly expenses. Please tell me how that's not a big chunk of the pie.

Just looked it up; the United States spends about 4.3% of its GDP yearly on the military (2010 figures). If you're talking about the federal budget and the military's portion of that pie, then your statement is true in that aspect.
