Stoichiometry - JPTheMonkey - 2011-03-23 Okay, so, I am taking Chemistry 1 (High School), and we're doing Stoichiometry. Problem is, I have no clue what we're doing. I literally cannot stay awake in that class. The teacher is one of those that puts you to sleep. I have basically missed every lesson on it and am asking friends in class for help, but now they won't give it to me, nor will the teacher. The textbook sucks for this kind of thing. Wish math-related stuff was done like my math book where it shows the method, some examples, and then has you practice, rather than a wall of text. Not sure how to google this stuff, either, seeing as we're just doing the basics, not the in-depth stuff I'd find if I wiki'd it. Basically, we've covered Limited(ing?) Reactants (not sure of this), how to calculate how much of a reactant is required to produce x amount of a product (I know this, friends at least taught me that part), and one other thing I'll check tomorrow that I don't know seeing as I followed what my friend's told me to do and got it wrong on the quiz, costing me half of the points .If possible, is there a nice way to do this without dimensional analysis? I hate that method so much, and the teacher's finally accepted that, but gives me all-or-nothing credit unless I use it (she used to just hand me 0's). If needed, I can give some examples tomorrow. Sadly, I only know how to do it with dimensional analysis(if thats the ____| _____ | _____| like thing). I have my old PreAP Chem test over that section so I'll post a sample question. I'll be putting subscripts in parathesis cause I don't know how to type that lol.

I do it on tests to show work if needed, but otherwise I do it logically. Eh. I used to find the units of the answer they were asking and just start eliminating or adding stuff(units) by multiplying/dividing without any kind of plan. I suppose for this type of problem, the song will always remain the same? EDIT: On my test these equations weren't balanced, but I assume since you're this far in Chem you should know how to do it.

Stoichiometry - XTOTHEL - 2011-03-26 ^ limiting reagent questions are quite simple. 1. Find the balanced chemical equation. 2. Assume one of the reagents have UNLIMITED supply and calculate the amount of products it will yield. 3. Assume the other reagents have UNLIMITED supply and calculate the amount of products (same product as above) it will yield. 4. Repeat step 3 if the equation contains more than 2. 5. Compare the amount of products, the one with the least amount of yield is the limiting reagent. <- meaning you will have excess of the other ones. I really try to stay awake in this class but she does not allow us to do anything but what she says we can (basically watch an 'ELMO' project her working the homework out and explaining it for 90 minutes, bell rings, leave for next class). I have started bringing a book and reading it under the desk (I have to have something to do else I'll fall asleep which is why I hate teachers and tend to fall asleep more in their classes if they don't let us do anything), but getting caught is not good. Luckily she stuck me in the far corner and we have lab tables making it easy until she starts going around checking how you're doing. People think I'm a genius of sorts seeing as I generally make A's after sleeping through every class. Just Chemistry is murder if I sleep through it because there's no textbook to refer to to figure something out. But, if I fall asleep after learning something, it's another story. Yeah you make A's cause you rely on Southperrians ![]() Nah man I hear ya, I can say the same about this year cause physics is probably the worst class to fall asleep in and I was loaded with AP classes this year cause I wanted to really leave with something nice on my transcript and it got stressful like none other from the get go. All sciences in general are murder, but mainly it's caused by the teacher. My chemistry teacher was funny, but had the lamest jokes and she would teach us lil tricks like we were in 4th grade to help us learn stuff better. I can't blame her though, it worked. Just try and get through it the best you can and don't let anyone tell you that a bad teacher is a bad excuse, because it's actually a great excuse. They are out there. |
