If it proved successful, would that not mean we should have received some sort of message from our future selves by now? Or perhaps soon. At the very least, we'll see proof of time traveling before actually making the travel ourselves.

Perhaps we have and the message was tossed out as some sort of hoax because the message randomly popped into a random person's mail?

That means it's useless. Our future selves naturally have had more trials than we have, and if they haven't been successful, what's our reason to try? But then, if we don't try, then our future selves won't have tried anything at all by their time!

I don't understand how this avoids paradoxes. Changing the past is changing the future and since this is controlled by humans, any ripple that would stop them from doing this in the first place would create a paradox.

I've actually been thinking about about time travel and how to avoid a paradox recently and have come to the conclusion that the only way to do it would be to actually create a circuit or potentially a universal spiral that goes like this:
Travel back in time to when you're just a child. Find someone you know you can trust and confide in them, tell them to write down everything you say (don't write it down yourself or it won't exist later). Include your reasons for having traveled back in time and the exact date and time you left to the exact point you finished discussing this with the person you're confiding in and the must include that they must also travel back to complete the circuit. Make sure they give the younger you the letter and emphasize its importance.
Ideally this would derail history rather than creating a wall, as you wouldn't be preventing yourself from traveling back which is where most paradoxes begin.
Problem with this theory, besides the obvious impossibility of time travel, is that it depends on a lot of conditions being just right, such as you surviving after having made the changes and also your confident following through or also not dying before making the message clear.

If we consider time to be a dimension at which everything moves along, there technically shouldn't be "afterimages" once we've left a certain point.
Once you move one foot ahead, you are no longer standing in your previous physical position. Basically, there should not be two -or subsequently, infinite- YOUs in the spatial dimensions. If the same applies to Time as well, then it would mean once our world as a whole has passed a certain point in time, NOTHING of our world remains to be seen at that point. Not ourselves, not the buildings, not the trees. What's left there is either a/ nothing, or b/ something else completely outside of our spatial dimensions, not a duplicated version of it.
This is limited to the mechanics of spatial dimensions, though, where no two things can exist at one same place at one same time, or that there can be no two identical versions of one thing.
To have multiple correlative versions of one same thing is kind of... mind-boggling.

I think 'afterimages' would be correlative to footprints. Each 'afterimage' would be proof that you were there and time travel would simply be moving back to that print.
Time travel as a whole is just fantasy, though. It's a romanticized notion that we should be able to change the things that have gone wrong in the past but all things are relative and what's wrong for me may have been right for you, so the ability to change that would require the power to strip away free-will itself, which is (hopefully!) beyond anything humans can ever reach.

Also consider this, fate has a way of course correcting. You may be able to avoid a certain situation but something else will happen to put you back on course. So if a person is supposed to die then said person will die although it will just happen in a different manner. Time travel is not so impossible. We just have not yet figured out how to do it.
