Effective Study Habits - Felicitates - 2011-03-01 Just out of curiosity, what you do guys do? (I'm looking at you Asians! Jk <3) I've noticed that the slack, do things the night before and cramming for a test the night before is not the way to go, so I was wondering if everyone could share what their personal philosophies on studying are. Perhaps this could be of use to your fellow Southerperrians having a tough time in school. Share~ Effective Study Habits - kanevaldier - 2011-03-01 For my part, I always found that studying first thing in the morning right after waking up helped in retaining information. It also helped doing the same thing right before I went to bed. Effective Study Habits - Shidoshi - 2011-03-01 I'll give the partial (the good part) truth of how I study as advice. What I do is that I go to every class and pay a lot of attention during classes (not sleeping, chatting, texting, drawing, etc), really paying very close attention. As for how much I study at home, I can't say that's a good advice to give to people... I study very little and tend to do things on the last minute. Surprisingly enough I'm doing a double degree in France that I got with my good grades so I can't say it's all bad. Effective Study Habits - aslemn - 2011-03-01 I don't study for much time, and don't do it daily, because i tend to memorize things that were said in class. But when i do it, i do it in the computer, one tab with the internet page regarding what i'm studying, and other irrelevant tabs to distract myself each 10 minutes. And it's impressively effective. As i do really learn from studying like this. But i can't guarantee it'd work for anyone else :S Effective Study Habits - Shidoshi - 2011-03-01 Right now my study habits are even more broken since the university here in France thinks it's a good idea to have all tests in one week instead of spreading them through the semester. That way I spend the whole semester as if I was on holidays and then have to catch up on everything on the last week. With tests spread out I can stress one week before each test and study for it, allowing me to always be studying but without that much stress. Effective Study Habits - Mute - 2011-03-01 Repetition, repetition, repetition. Studying in parts, remembering those parts by drilling yourself over and over, and adding on to that with every repetition. EDIT:: Coming up with pneumonic devices also helps. Effective Study Habits - Corn - 2011-03-01 Pay attention in class, a lot. Sleep early. It's no good cram studying at 4 am. Study well before the test. Try to not procrastinate. Effective Study Habits - Alex123123 - 2011-03-01 Right now I'm procrastinating instead of studying for an exam due tomorrow. But... Corn Wrote:Try to not procrastinate. This This THIS! Oh the hypocrisy :S Effective Study Habits - Shidoshi - 2011-03-01 Corn Wrote:Pay attention in class, a lot. I follow all this, except that I'm procrastinating right now. and I don't sleep early normally. and I started sleeping/skipping some classes. Oh pineapple. Effective Study Habits - Moonlapse - 2011-03-01 I usually time myself with a stopwatch. Every time I take a break to brows SP or something I stop the stopwatch. This keeps me from slacking off too frequently, and it lets me know how much time I spend actually studying. Effective Study Habits - Worthyness - 2011-03-01 only way i'd be able to fully study and focus is with a full stomach with absolutely no distractions and maybe some music. Otherwise, if i have a computer or TV or w/e, I'll be a failure when it comes to tests. Otherwise: not too much cramming, sleeping sufficiently, and repetition always gets me to remember stuff (AND if the class has homework, I'll typically be better off than in a class with no homework). Effective Study Habits - Holypie - 2011-03-01 I don't know, I don't study ;_; I really should though, but... Effective Study Habits - Swerve - 2011-03-01 1. Turn Subject X into a scrap - booking project. - Causes me to collect notes - Causes me to organizes notes - Causes me to reread notes - Causes me to get hands on with notes as I decorate my notebook - Causes me to cross-reference with the textbook 2. Think about writing Subject X in an Online Journal / Blog Post. - Causes me to reconsider simple terms - Causes me to consider the importance of such terms - Causes me to ponder about the application of such terms - Causes me to understand the material as I have to grasp the basics before I can write about it 3. Knowing about Subject X allows me to help others - Allows me to help my friends when they procrastinate - Allows me to apply this knowledge to life in general - Allows me to reduce unknown and unaccounted ignorance - Allows me to work with other people to understand a hard or difficult concept / material My philosophy is that learning is an organic process. You will learn a lot of material and you will forget a lot of material. The brain isn't a computer that will store all inputs for kingdom come. Retention rates are never high in human beings. Therefore it is important that you find something that you enjoy and keep at it. Constantly refreshing material in and out of class is an important indicator of interest and individuality. I keep my old textbooks for this reason (also I get less than 5% original store price back from returns). There is only so much that you can remember. Therefore it is important that you keep the knowledge you value close and fresh in your mind. It is also important to be voracious as retaining a stagnant body of knowledge could also be an active process (you could spend a whole year reviewing General Biology/ Chemistry / Physics - MCAT anyone?) that fortifies horizontal growth, but isn't enough to grasp modern advances in the respective field areas which should be a desirable vertical growth goal in order to eventually lead to you solving problems in those respective fields. Studying is important. However learning should be the primary focus for studying. Something that we cannot prioritize when cramming or digesting large amounts of information at one time. If you cannot respect the subject you are learning, then it will be difficult to study / learn it. Accruing knowledge is not an objective process, it is fueled by curiosity, avarice, and passion. If you're hanging out with a guy / girl who bores the pomegranate out of you, you won't get anything from hanging out with him / her. In my mind, the same thing applies with academics. Don't pay an institution for them to make you suffer for four years. That's just silly. Effective Study Habits - Rob - 2011-03-01 I need to study with someone else and discuss what I'm studying. That's the only way I can succeed. hell, even explaining something to someone else Effective Study Habits - Fiel - 2011-03-01 If I'm studying for a test that will be difficult, I go through a role-playing scenario where I am the evil professor constructing the most god-awful test to cover the material that man has ever known. After creating that test, then I study off of that. It usually goes pretty well. Effective Study Habits - RedRaven16 - 2011-03-01 I don't study I pay attention in class and I get good grades on tests (I don't do the homework often. yay procrastination) Effective Study Habits - Felicitates - 2011-03-01 I've lately been avoiding studying at all in my dorm room. I either study in a quiet room or the library, and its really improved my attention to what I'm reading. Also in response to Swerve: I keep all of my old textbooks too simply because I enjoy reading them ;x /supernerd Effective Study Habits - Zelkova - 2011-03-01 Fiel Wrote:If I'm studying for a test that will be difficult, I go through a role-playing scenario where I am the evil professor constructing the most god-awful test to cover the material that man has ever known.
