The reason they'd put a million dollars into it is to push the development beyond a home made game to a professional quality mmo. And yes, they'd make all that money back and then some with this game.
People often forget that nexon is a company who needs to make money.

MMO's of the variety Nexon hosts are EXPENSIVE to develop, beyond the reach of a small group without funding. Funding and/or co-development would help an idea for an MMO become ready for market.
