Malcolm, a policeman from Darfield, was driving into town to a rowing event when the earthquake hit.
"I thought I had a flat tyre, then the place was shaking like hell."
He said oak trees in the Hagley Park had been uprooted and fallen across tents.
"I'm shaken, I'm at Christ College now and the school is a shambles - there's a lot of damage to the buildings.
"All of the water pipes are burst and it looks like a tsunami coming across the park."

His daughter was at Rangi Ruru school and she said students were running around screaming.
Malcolm's wife Jenny said the mayor was on the radio telling people not to go outside.
"It doesn't sound good - it sounds like this time people injured," she said.
Today's 6.3 earthquake would have felt more powerful for Christchurch residents than the original quake on September 4.
GNS duty seismologist Bill Fry said the acceleration of today's earthquake was larger in Christchurch city than the magnitude 7 earthquake last year.
"Instantaneously, they would have felt the greatest amount of shaking today. But the duration would not have been as long."
The earthquake happened at a shallow depth of five to six metres below ground.
In the city, the acceleration measured the same as the force of gravity.
In September, the largest acceleration felt around the city was on its eastern side, and this measured 0.8 times the force of gravity.
Today's earthquake did not last as long as the September quake, but Dr Fry said its duration had not been confirmed yet.

They've been having bad aftershocks for around 5 months now, but this afternoon have just been hit with a 6.3 earthquake. Unlike the last one which happened at 4 in the morning, this one happened during the middle of the day when everyone is out and about. I'm watching the live news cast now and it's just awful. Destruction everywhere, saw a guy trapped in a building, and the nice cathedral in the centre of the city (pretty much the centre point of Christchurch) has had giant chunks taken out of it. Just as I was watching they had an aftershock that rattled the church again. The university has been evacuated, and I certainly hope Heidi is ok.

Scary how common those 5+ quakes are around the ring of fire. I love geology, but wouldn't want to live anywhere near that boundary. Experienced my first 3.x quake last year and I couldn't sleep without thinking about earthquakes for the next two or three days. -_-;

5-6 kilometer-deep earthquake is very shallow earthquake. Not a good sign, especially if its a medium-strength (or bigger) earthquake. This makes the effects of the earthquake much worse than if it was located deeper in the ground.

I've been so busy lately I didn't even see this. That's just horrible. Natural disasters are among one of the most horrific things a human can experience. I hope the casualties are minimal. (one casualty is one too many though) Be safe!

This earthquake was a 6.3, and the last was a 7.1. However, this one was closer and shallower and was far more deadly

It's all over the news here in Aus. I remember reading somewhere that you could feel it from Wellington down to Dunedin, hopefully you all are okay. I remember Rick saying he lived close to Chris (Wani), who lives within the area (hope you are the correct Rick i'm thinking of).
Last of what I heard this morning the death toll was somewhere in the mid 60's & there were still about 150 people reported missing.
I had a friend move back to somewhere in the south island just the other week, luckily she came back for a visit the day before the earthquake.

Surprised there are so many of those buildings out there considering how seismically active the area around NZ seems to be. Hopefully those buildings are a local thing and not the trend for the rest of the country...

Well, 71 confirmed dead so far with a lot of people still missing. One unexplored building has officially been named a recovery mission (as opposed to search and rescue). Heaps of helpers coming from overseas, though. I never expected the likes of Japan and Taiwan...

Some specially-trained firefighters (trained in earthquake search-and-rescue missions) from Los Angeles are heading over. Saw it on the news last night.
