A tale from my memory - Unauthorized Intruder - 2011-02-03
There's a tldr version down here.
I was in 9th grade, compare to US educational system. My school sent me to some kind of knowledge competition. I went there with my schoolmates, around 10 of them.
And so the competition began. I was very excited to see the first question. And there it was.
Which website do you use to search information?
Google sparked up in my brain once I finished reading the question but I put that away. "That's a website that finds websites that have information", I thought. After that my brain was empty. I looked around. To the left, they were writing something. To the right, they were writing something. And there I was, sitting there with a whiteboard I was supposed to write my answer into. And time was up. I left that whiteboard blank. After they checked everybody's answer, they revealed the correct answer.

So I walked out of the room, along with another girl I didn't even see her face, pissed. Out of 60ish people in that room, only two people didn't have correct answer. I didn't want to be in that room anymore(we could choose to stay in the back of the room or get in/out of the room freely) so I went down stair to find something to drink.
It took around 3 minutes until I got up stair into that room again. I was surprised most of people were sitting in the back of the room. There were only 5-6 people remaining. I asked my friend what did I miss, he said nothing but one question.
What's the name of the capital of Greece?
"And what's your answer?" I asked. "Athen", he said."So isn't that correct answer?" "No, I forgot an s in the back. All of us do". What his "all of us" was everybody that was sitting there. I was shocked, never thought that 55 people would make same mistake at the same time. But there they were, made same mistake at the same time. I decided to sit up there with my friends to watch the competition.
There are birds on buffaloes. A boy can count 39 heads and 82 legs from them. How many birds are there and how many buffaloes are there?
It just took a basic equation calculation to get the answer. And the answer was, as I calculated.
35 birds and 4 buffaloes.
4 more people left the area. There were only 2 guys remaining; one is a friend of mine. I was very keen to see the next question. And a few moments later.
Where is the Golden Gate Bridge?
I raged at this point. That was the easiest question I've ever found in a serious competition. If only I had answered Google.com, I would've been there, answering this question. And of course the answer was.
San Francisco.
Both of them got correct answer of course. My friends also raged at this question too. One s missing and they missed the whole thing. And the next question revealed.
What's the largest mammal in the world?
I thought this question was easy as the last one. But surprisingly, only one of two got correct answer. My friend answered blue whale while the other guy answered elephant. Of course the correct answer was whale.
So my friend won the competition, got the prize and so on. I went home that day, told my dad that I was failed since the first question. My dad asked what's wrong. I was to shy to answer honestly, so I lied to him that I couldn't see the question. Since I also had nearsighted eyes, my dad believed me and brought me to make eyeglasses in the next day.
In my high school life, my friend who won that competition always beat me in English subject, which I always had second place of whole class while he always got the first place.
tldr; I went into knowledge competition. I failed shamefully since the first round. A friend of mine won that competition, and he always won me in English subject in my high school life.
Note: this competition was held in Thailand. All the questions were in English.
