34-year-old Shannon Johnson has been arrested after telling police officers that the reason her one-year-old son drowned in a bathtub several months ago is because she was busy playing a game on Facebook and left him to bathe unsupervised.

Johnson was playing a Facebook game called Cafe World as well as browsing her news feed and uploading videos during the time her son was in the bathtub. She apparently only checked in on him once over the course of a ten-minute period and justified it by saying that she felt "her son was preternaturally independent, and simply wanted to be alone."
Once she noticed that the bathroom was oddly silent, Johnson rushed to check on her son only to find him "lying sideways, with his face submerged." She immediately took him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Johnson is facing potential charges of child abuse resulting in neglectful death.

A regular facepalm isn't enough in this scenario. 1 year old being extremely independent or not, you can't just leave em alone in a bathtub until at least 4-5.

Of course, Facebook is fairly irrelevant, because the child's death was caused by the mother's negligence. She could have been spending her time cooking, on the phone, or cleaning up after her child and it would be the same. It comes down to her leaving the child alone, and not Facebook itself.

No, it is not. The fault is not Facebook but people who fail to set their priorities straight. Some people are addicted to Facebook and they neglect their other responsibilities. If not Facebook, distractions could be easily be caused something else: Twitter, MySpace, Maple Story.

Agreeing. Deaths are not caused by inanimate objects. They're caused by the stupid people that are using those inanimate objects. This is like the type of people that screams at their computer(s) when it's sucking major c`ock. It's not their computer's fault (it isn't most of the time, unless it's a major hardware issue), it's their fault for being a dumbf`uck.
