I recently acquired a new 4th generation iPod touch, and this is the first Apple product I've owned (I have never owned a iPhone or the original iPod [or its nano version], or a Mac computer in the past. I'm not sheltered when it comes to playing with new technological toys. I chose not to get one of the Apple toys until later.
)With that, do you guys have excellent recommendations for good, useful iPod touch applications? Preferably, I'm looking for apps that are available for free, but I will also consider apps that won't burn a hole in my pocket.
(Note: I have already downloaded a few free apps that I had heard of previously, or have toyed with before in the past)

Free Apps (check out FreeAppADay.com if you'd like - they have a decent amount of good apps for free mixed in):
FML - if you enjoy reading them. :p
Flashlight - Free "flashlight", also has some fun things to play around with. Super useful if you ever need a bright light.
AppBox Lite - Has some useful Apps like converters, how long until x day, etc. I've found it useful.
BatteryStatus - Gives you a more accurate read of your battery life instead of just guessing what % that bar is at.
Dictionary.com - Pocket dictionary by the website. The free version does have ads, but it's not that bad.
Speller - Free spelling app; also useful
TrippingFest - Fun app where you can draw different things and mess around with reflections of what you draw and stuff.
Also, check out the developer FreeTheApps - they make a bunch of fun/useful apps to play around with.
Paid:
Scrabble - if you enjoy it. They put it on sale every so often, so I got it for $1.
Angry Birds - Totally worth it. $1.
Peggle - Lots of fun. Like $1-3
Plants v. Zombies - PopCap game. Lots of fun (a tad laggy on a few levels, but so worth it). Also like $3.

- Facebook (just useful, honestly)
- Pandora
- iheartradio
- Dictionary.com (best part about this app is it's a full dictionary that doesn't need wifi or 3G/4G to operate)
- Shakespeare (personal favorite. every shakespeare work in its entirety on this app, again without the use of wifi or 3G/4G. For that reason it's also a ~60 MB app
Those are the ones I use most frequently/think are the most unique and/or have the most useful applications (no pun intended) for real life. Others that I also have after looking a ton, and still use on occasion:
- Fluent News (my new news app that scans headlines from all top news sources, and lets me turn off at least one [in the free version; lets me turn off Fox news
], also pings your iTouch with new headlines as soon as they happen [provided you're in wifi; it was the first way I found out about the NK attacks on SK recently, for example])- The Chemical Touch Lite (full periodic table, without the need of wifi/3G/4G)
- NPR News (amazingly in-depth app with tons of things to do)
- Relax Helper Lite (it's basically a white noise app, which I use extensively while studying as I need either quiet or white noise to study)
- The Weather Channel (self explanatory)
- WebMD Mobile (it has the popular Symptom Checker, though I can't say I've used it that often)
- Sudoku (game-wise I feel Sudoku apps are great; there are tons of free ones to choose from, so just find one you like. It'll stave off boredom for at least a little bit)
Final comments: All of the apps I've mentioned in this post are free, so it doesn't hurt to take a look at any of them if they sound interesting. There are, of course, thousands of worthwhile paid apps, but they can get expensive really quickly and I find that, unless you see yourself using something like crazy, there's probably a free version that does the job you need. This all leads into my biggest statement which, as you can surmise, revolves around the need for Wifi connectivity with the iTouch for usage of many apps. The bottom line is that while apps are great and can help you do a lot of things by truly showing off the iTouch as a palm computer as opposed to an mp3 player, the majority of its abilities are rendered useless if you're not connected to a Wifi network. I know a lot of times people feel like they'll be fine and blow this point off, but seriously, I'm on a university campus with blazingly fast Wifi in every building and I still don't find myself needing to use apps that often.
In other words, apps, in my opinion, are most useful on smart phones (like the iPhone, in this case) that can access their 3G/4G networks when necessary to use the apps. It's times that you're "off the internet grid" that being on a cellular data grid really changes app usefulness.

Last.fm requires a last.fm account. I always found that to be useless since it only plays your online library... when your iPod already has your music with you. If you want scrobbl, last.fm will scrobbl tracks you played on your iTouch based off the plays recorded in iTunes. If not, there are live scrobbl apps too. And one in Cydia.

TeamViewer (Free) - Remote access your desktop comp from your iTouch (requires TeamViewer to be installed on your desktop)
Touch Mouse (Free) - Uses the iTouch as a remote mouse/keyboard (requires TouchMouse server to be installed on your desktop)
Speedtest (Free) - Speedtest.net for the iTouch
Photobucket (Free) - MUST have for iPT4 since you can upload pics straight to your PB account.
AudioIn ($3) - Turns your iTouch into a wireless speaker that plays audio from your desktop comp (requires AudioServer to be installed on your desktop)

Boost 3D ($2) - Fun "racing" type game. You dodge stuff.
