Surely with a large community such as ours, even though relatively young, with numbers growing closer to 50k a pretty high amountstatistically there must be deaths? And if there was, how would we know? It would be tough to tell the difference between an inexplicable absence and a death without actually being in contact with said person IRL or through text, phone or facebook to a lesser extent.

It's a kinda haunting thought; chances are that these people that you consider friends wouldn't know if you had died and their online 'life' would continue on as normal, nothing but a 'oh wow x-user hasn't posted in a while' 'oh he must be swamped with uni or something'.

Have any of you smogonites had any experiences with death of an online friend, any perspectives or stories to share?

I had a good friend from MS who had died a bit over a year ago.

That's probably the only death I've experienced of someone close to me so far in my life. *points to avatar*

If his gf didn't play MS as well, I probably would've never known.

Yeah a girl who seemed to like me. She had a car accident turned up in the hospital. Her brother told me once in a while how she was doing... Eventually she got a heartattack.
He ranted as much as he could after he told me and then freaked out and quit all together.

I havent felt that bad since ages @_@

I'm going to write a Southperry death post now and put it into my will that someone will post it on the Angry Dome when I die. Everyone who enjoys the post should leave me bright orange flowers. Everyone who found the post to be fairly run of the mill should leave me dull yellow flowers. Everyone who found the post to be subpar should leave me black flowers.

There are websites that you can sign up for that will alert your friends when you pass away. Basically, when you stop checking in with the website, after a long while it'll send out an e-mail to all your friends. At least that's how I think it works.

And there isn't a website like this, there should be.

I've often wondered about this, given my hometown's current condition. And I've come to the conclusion that: People who have me on Facebook would spread the news to everywhere.
