So, I got Rosetta Stone for Christmas - Link - 2010-12-22

I had my Christmas tonight because I'm going to be out of town until after the first week of January or so.

My dad bought me Rosetta Stone's level 3 Japanese set. I've only had time to open it up and try the first lesson, due to the fact that I have to go pack and pomegranate. It's pretty interesting. Of course, I have stuff to learn on the way, so I tend to miss the meaning of some words. Some words, however, seem to be easily understood, even when I don't know them, just by the way it teaches it. The program is huge. It has a CD based on language learning; I haven't ventured to check how many lessons it has on it, but it looks like it has quite a bit. Then, it has 4 more CDs based on practicing. That's a lot of CDs based on practicing. lol I wonder how long it'll take me to get through all of this without repeating it to perfect it.


Thoughts, feelings, etc. toward Rosetta Stone (if you've used it, of course)?






Anyway, I'm also going to be gone from tomorrow morning at 6~7am until late at night (around a 10 hour drive from here?). :< I hope I can manage to get the 17th day's ring... >_>


I also got some other interesting stuff for Christmas. I got these HUGE ASS headphones... HOLY HELL they're huge. They're by GameCom? According to my dad, it's supposed to be really good.

He also bought me a nice Webcam of my own. :3

My mom got me a few shirts, a sweater, this remote-controlled helicopter (pretty cool) and a bunch of other stuff. I didn't really get much this year compared to usually/the rest of my family, though I didn't even ask for anything. lol

Last.fm > Rosetta stone when it comes to Asian languages. Though, I haven't tried the newer version, older one wasn't so great though. Nice for vocabulary, I guess, but even then there are better alternatives.

Well, the Rosetta Stone thing has this online program where I can talk to live instructors online and practice my Japanese or ask questions about Japanese. It has other programs to it. I haven't really looked at Last.fm, other than the time I looked it up and all I could find were self-made lists that people put up (I have a hard time trusting people on the internet when it comes to learning stuff). Rosetta Stone is how the U.S Armed Service members learn languages, which means I would be using this if I were to join the Armed Services anyway. lol

Oh well. If this doesn't turn out well, it was always nice for my dad to try. I really hope it turns out well enough. Of course, I'm not expecting to become fluent with this, but any step foward from where I am is a huge step, considering the past year and a half or so that I've been away from my Japanese classes have been nothing but playing a Japanese online game. x_x

I like their voice-recognition software, though. I've never actually used one of these before. It tends to not pick up on my voice some times for words like "boku," "desu," "imasu," etc., but I think that's because I'm just not used to it and am speaking unclearly or too softly. lol

I downloaded it a while ago. I'm somewhere in the second unit in Level 1 at the moment. So far, I think it's excellent for raw vocab, but they fall way short on a few things that they really should have explained. They try to teach you Japanese without speaking any English. While this works great for, as I said, vocab, it's less than optimal for thing such as the "counters" (人 nin, 本 hon, 枚 mai, 冊 satsu, 匹 hiki, 個 ko, etc.) which they tried to teach early in Unit 2, but I was left totally confused until I looked it up. I also have a feeling they tried to teach me the particles は, が, and を, but I'm sure I wouldn't have understood them if I hadn't already known them. I personally supplement it with Tae Kim's grammar guide, because some things just require english explanation.

The voice-tutor isn't really that bad if you annunciate well, so that wasn't much of an issue for me. But don't feel bad if you get bored -- especially early on. They use a lot of repetition to help you remember the vocab. You can totally skip over the "reading" sections for quite a while since I know you already know hiragana and katakana. You might benefit quite a bit from having kanji turned on (you can change how the things they're saying at you are displayed: romanji, kana, kanji with furigana, and kanji) if you need kanji practice though.

[COLOR="Magenta"]I learned Italian and Portugese with Rosetta stone. If you do it daily and practice, it really sticks with you..

The thing abut language is that you HAVE to practice it, otherwise you lose the ability.

I've been using the newer version of Rosetta stone, where it requires lots of speaking. There is actually an exercise that requires you to finish the set of phrases.

RS: "Man is sitting."
"Woman is sitting."
"Man is standing."
You (say): "Woman is standing."

The final exam is an actual conversation, its really fun. I do love RS v4 :3

I like smart.fm for remembering kanjis and stuff like that, but like Kunagisa said, it's nice for vocabulary.
