I Wish I Was An Intellectual - Swerve - 2010-12-20 I wish I was an intellectual. I always get frustrated when I read commentary from intelligent people. They talk about people that I don't know about and use examples that I just don't understand. If I could understand them, then I feel like I could get a lot smarter. But if feels like there is this giant wedge that blocks me from clearing that gap. Especially when it comes to the reasoning behind their actions which always seems hard to figure out. This giant wedge makes me angry. It feels like someone just drove a nail on my skull and used it to split my brain in half. I guess this causes me to be angry and to be a major jerk whenever I read these things. I wish I was an intellectual. That way I could invent flying cars and rainbow powered reactors to generate energy for the whole entire world. Free energy for all of mankind. I think that using plants for fuel is the new future and that if people were smarter we wouldn't have to fight all these wars for gasoline. I think that it is stupid that we kill innocent human beings to just get some oil. Instead we should spend more time thinking about solutions like grassoline so that there would be no more strife and problems for anyone. If we didn't waste time doing the same things over and over like killing each other, we would be able to do new things that would help everyone. I wish I was an intellectual. If I was smart enough then I would be able to learn how to work with other people instead of just being angry at them. But if I do get really smart, then I'm not sure I would want to tell anyone. Because if I told everyone I was smart, then everyone would have expectations of me and then I would have all this pressure and I don't work well under pressure because people expect results. A lot of other people might be jealous of my intelligence or there might be other people smarter than me who make me look dumb. Also I don't know why I would need to tell people I am smart. I should just show them I am smart by doing smart things and maybe they notice how smart I am by my actions and can see that I'm smart without me needing to tell them. But I am too dumb to do smart things and thus make a fool out of myself. I wish I was an intellectual. How about you? Are you an intellectual? I Wish I Was An Intellectual - Corn - 2010-12-20 Swerve, you're more of an intellectual than 99% of these forums. I wish I was an intellectual .

Everyone here makes me feel so inferior when I chat with anyone. Even Random_Overlord (I'm not even joking or trying to offend). I've always tried and tried to be even somewhat smart, but it just never happens. Rob, I feel the same way toward what Swerve said. I Wish I Was An Intellectual - Mute - 2010-12-20 Swerve, you're a master of satire. You are an intellectual. I Wish I Was An Intellectual - Kurtle - 2010-12-20 Swerve, just accept that some people are just better than everyone and have the write to ramble about idiots. You are so ungrateful sometimes. I was going to nitpick at this post, I really was. Then I realized there is nothing to pick out about it. I Wish I Was An Intellectual - Shidoshi - 2010-12-20 We are all good at different things. I don't know you that much but I know you are excelent argumenter and can write texts quite well using good logic. That by itself is already quite nice. Me, for example, I have a strange ability to learn/remember some things in a way very few people around me can (I really love accumulating knowledge, even maple story knowledge or anime knowledge). I learn languages really easily and can pass with As with mostly just watching classes. I'm pretty bad with some other things like social interactions (requires a whole lot of effort from me) I Wish I Was An Intellectual - Mark - 2010-12-20 Am I an intellectual? I Wish I Was An Intellectual - MetaSeraphim - 2010-12-20 What if I am not the intellectual, what if I am the sheep? A lot people are good at nothing. Sure, we have some things we can do, but we're good at nothing. We excel at nothing and we're fully aware of this. When people, who have proven themselves to be of higher standards, practices, intelligence, and the like start doing stuff like this and make it seem serious, we feel even worse about ourselves because that makes us look so much worse and we feel worse. People like me can't even hold a half-intelligent conversation, much less excel at anything in life. I really can't find a single thing I'm good at and that's not even in comparison to anything. Japanese. You're better at Japanese than the average foreigner. Point stands. Excelling in an area of knowledge/practice is being, not slightly but notably, better than the average. I Wish I Was An Intellectual - Link - 2010-12-20 Rob Wrote:Japanese. You're better at Japanese than the average foreigner. Point stands. Well, no, I'm not. If you want to compare, my five years of Japanese study is equal to the average 1 year of a foreigner who actually dedicates themselves. Obviously, I'm not good at it in that aspect. Dude, you're better than 97% of the average American at speaking Japanese. I Wish I Was An Intellectual - Link - 2010-12-20 Corn Wrote:Dude, you're better than 97% of the average American at speaking Japanese. There's a huge difference between being good at it and showing that you're good at it. I've only shown people that I'm good at it, while in reality, I'm not even close to good. I'm far from fluent and my Japanese ability doesn't even come up to par for one who has even studied it even a fraction of the time that I have. I Wish I Was An Intellectual - Jamie_Kurosawa - 2010-12-20 You don't have to claim intellectualism to be intellectual. Intellectualism is designed to simply do what it does... raise questions, inspire thinking, and broaden a view point. Swerve by stating what you did, you did exactly that. You questioned yourself. You saw a need for self advancement, critical thinking, wanting to understand what you do not, and even asked a question. Intellectualism isn't also about tearing down a view point and trying to simplify it by breaking it down and pointing out it's flaws. Intellectualism takes the view point as a whole, examines it, gathers the data therein, and then offers a rebuttal opinion to the whole, not parts. It's not about an absolute answer, perfection, or completing a generalization of topics into a focal point and view. Think of it this way... one idea, is one idea even if it is a sum of many different parts.... like a modern car. Yes you have doors, a radio, maybe a sunroof, a cup-holder, and often tinted or polarized windows, but while they are individualized in category and could be shown the need or un-need of each, equally discussed, they are still the sum of the parts of a whole.... one car. And yes you DID notice a Bruce Lee quotation Swerve. Good job recognizing it. That one quotation has been a very powerful one. I commend you for that. I'm not actually going to say you are an intellectual Swerve, I'm going to leave that for your final decision out of respect for you. I feel it best to leave it to you to make the final decision in your own intellectualism and where you stand within it. Only then will you not only decide where you are, but where you need to go as well. |
