When I try to put it into a hotkey, it dissapears when I try to equip another hat.
How do I keep it?

decent skills have been patched after big bang released. you can no longer keep the skill once you switch to another equip.
people who had the decent skill before big bang can switch to a different equip and keep the skill (as long as they dont wear a equip with decent skill ever again).

Damn, that sucks... but oh well, already made that up for another cube that gave 15% dex and damage reduction.

Not sure if this way was patched, but you could equip the item and drop is like GPQ earrings.
And either way, if it's just door, you can put the hat on, door then take it off.
