Tasty. Even tried tripe. Not something I'd spit out, but not something I'd want to eat in quantity. Sweet Pork buns @_@. Mmmmm

pomegranate was pretty cheap. $2.95/item, each item being 3/4 dumplings. We had two items plus an order of pan-fried noodles that was a seperate charge. 4 people, $43 dollars.
The waitress kept opening stuff to see what it was and ask if we wanted it, and she'd hit stuff like chicken feet and just immediately close it muttering "No, you don't want that". She was quite shocked when my friend wanted the tripe. She loves her some tripe.

Dim Sum is cheaper than many other kinds of cuisine. Since most restaurants do not prepare the Dim Sum on premises (ie. bought frozen) lower prices should be expected. I think people shouldn't order things normally found in a typical Asian Supermarket like the buns and sticky rice, but that's just me.

The Chicken Feet (Fong Jao) is very good tasting actually, but the thought of it being called Chicken Feet makes it unappetizing. It's deep fried with a batter, then steamed with added sauces. Not sure why the waitress wouldn't recommend it - it's one of the more memorable items on a Dum Sum menu (it's also one of the least healthy choices). The Tripe (Zhu Tou) is also quite popular (it's also a popular dish eaten chilled) so I don't think you had a really good waitress lol.

Fong Jao

I love Zha Leung, which is the Chinese Doughnut wrapped in rice noodle. Usually topped with Spring Onion, Sesame Seed, and served with sweet Soy Sauce/Hoisin Sauce.

Another unknown, but unique (not the typical Ha Gao, Siu Mai combo) dish is Mut Yu Jai, which is a kind of Curried Squid.

Fong Jao looks good. The other two look repulsive. The last one, while I know it's noodles, looks like snails and that's grossing me out.

Haha, it's all squid actually. It's like a ball with the tentacles (which can be detached if you don't want to eat that part), but the insides are empty.

Lol, I think she was a good enough waitress. She was just horribly stereotyped against the 3 white kids and the half-Asian who all spoke perfect English. We got a funny look just by saying "We're here for Dim Sum". Calling the chicken feet "memorable" makes me worry I'd remember it in a not-good way. As much as I like fried stuff, I really hate running into bones and things that crunch in my proteins foods. I avoided the spare ribs as well. And I've never been in an average Asian market, so pork buns were new and delicious for me.

When I was in Guangzhou last month, the first week pretty much every day = Dim Sum for breakfast. I'm not joking.

Oh, and they abolished cart pushing because usually that makes the dim sum cold over time or become wasted because people didn't want it. Now, you need to mark what you want and they bring it to you (like a sushi restaurant)

There were many dim sum choices that you pretty much cannot order over here in Canada Dim Sum restaurants.

Guang Zhou has such cheap breakfasts, like a meal for four is a dollar. It's a little funny though when I went to KFC for breakfast and they had congee :o

I prefer the cart pushing since you are exposed to everything there is to offer. If something's missing, just order it. I tend to avoid the restaurants that ask you to mark down your order since you have to wait and it's less interactive.

Regarding the cart thing, EVERY restaurant I went to while I was there didn't have carts Tongue

There's one kind of extra wide rice noodle (slimy) I like too and for a while I knew the Chinese name for it but I forgot. Probably like Zha Liang just with other stuff inside.

Sigh, I hate when Cantonese and Mandarin mix. Since Dim Sum is derived from Cantonese I decided it would be prudent to use that and Mandarin will be in brackets for the rest of my post.

Lor/Nor Mai Gai (Nuo Mi Ji) is the rice wrapped in the leaf you mentioned. It's super tasty but it's one of those things that you can buy at a supermarket, and anything thing with rice/noodles is a "stomach filler" in my eyes. It's kind of like a buffet I guess. Did you notice the fried rice/noodles, and soup are always placed closer to the tables?

The general term for those noodles, including the Zah Leung (Zha Liang), is Cheung Fun (Chang Fen). Just stick the main filling before Cheung Fun and you're all set (eg. Pork = Zhu Yok (Rou), Beef = Ngao Yok (Niu Rou))! Obviously the exception is the Zah Leung.

Sarah you don't what you're missing. Fried Chinese dough wrapped in the rice noodle is a guilty pleasure.

You guys need to try the rest of dim sum. Missing out on a lot of stuff. Given I'm essentially a mile away from Chinatown and family is Cantonese we always eat dim sum with relatives about every month or so.

Some faves of mine (including the fried dough wrap):

This is Char siew sou, essentially when BBQ pork meets flaky strudel

This is Dou fu fa, very soft tofu usually in a sweet syrup

This is Siu mai, pork dumplings. The stuff on top is fish eggs, which I don't really taste.

This is Jin deui, or sesame balls. It's a dough ball either empty or filled with a filling such as sweet bean paste.

Fried spring rolls are pretty good. One of my faves is ones with shrimp inside.

These are egg tarts, sweet egg custard in a pastry shell. It's something I always try to order at least once per dim sum

I'm sure it's Malay gou, which is essentially a soft egg sponge cake. Done right it's pretty good.
