edit: I take it all back. One Piece has restored my faith. It's just such an awesome pick-me-up of a show, pineapple.
I know this guy -- I've known him since middle school -- and for a year he was like "yo man you GOTTA try Bleach," so I gave it a shot. Roughly fifty episodes. And after the first main arc, I was bored out of my pomegranateting mind, goddamn. So I checked the episode list, and there are hundreds of episodes. Hundreds. How can this even happen? How can things not be resolved by now? Mother of god. I told my friend about it, and he goes "oh, after episode 100 it gets better." Episode pineappleing 100. I asked him if he enjoyed any shorter shows. Another friend of his, who happened to be with us at the time, chuckled and said that "anything with less than 30 episodes isn't worth watching." Then he suggested watching One Piece, and some slice of life series revolving around young girls who go to school. Except it isn't Azumanga Daioh. BUT I DIGRESS.
How can you enjoy this? It just goes on and on with no end in sight, and it doesn't even matter when the main character gets stronger, because there's always some new villain who is "just too strong" for everyone, until the protagonist pulls a win out of his ass again and you flip your pomegranate like it's never happened before. I suppose I can understand the nostalgia factor for some shows, but I simply cannot understand the hubub about these 500 episode cartoons that follow the same goddamned pattern. I'd rather watch a show that ends before it gets stale, but that's just me.
pomegranate, and here I am giving One Piece a shot because it actually looks interesting, and of course it's over 400 goddamned episodes. And it still isn't done. That guy still hasn't gotten his treasure. 400 goddamned episodes.

"Successful" animes tend to have a lot of episodes. I didn't know about naruto and i began to watch it. I watched every episode from 1 to current and read the manga. When your following along with an anime for a period of time you enjoy it better. Dont look at the episode count just watch each episode and be glad you dont have to wait a freaking week to find out what happens!

This is the only reason I continue to give these shows a shot. But after episode 60 or so, it just devolves into filler or "Protag. team meets Villain Y, who is very very strong" and I just can't keep going.

I'm about 40 episodes in, and it seems pretty good. It's really picked up since that Hawkeye fellow appeared.

Who cares, let them like what they want to like. Don't let them pick what they want you to watch, decide for yourself what you want to watch. If you don't like what they watch, then you already know not to take their suggestions, especially with the attitude they have. The guy that literally scoffed at the thought of watching anything with less than 30 episodes just proves that he doesn't really have much of an open mind to things. I doubt he's even seen enough series to properly make that judgement.
It's not like anything really happens in all those episodes. They can easily make a 100 episode arc fit in as little as 50 if they just cut all the bullcrap, and even less if they cut the filler, but some people find those enjoyable.
I don't mind people liking endless action series, nor do I try to act as if I have superior tastes. They can like what they want, and I'll like what I want. I'm sure they'd think my tastes are "pretentious shit" or something if I ever knocked their tastes.
People get hooked on whatever they want to get hooked on, that's all. I myself follow Negima (though not religiously or anything). Then again, that doesn't really try to take itself too seriously, and I did start it years ago and just rolled along with it as the chapters came out.

Myself I can't go any further than about 50 episodes of the same series.
After that it starts getting tiring, unless I'm keeping up with the anime as it comes out (managed to watch FMA:B's 68 episodes fine).
It's not really that a 300+ episodes series can't be good, it's just that the goodness/(time taken) ratio goes way down. I could be watching animes that are both awesome AND short.

@above: YES, that's exactly what I'm saying. I often get to that 50ish point mark, and then I just can't bring myself to go back. The exceptions being Pokemon and Dragonball, but I was younger and had trouble recognizing patterns back then. Plus I watched them as they progressed, like Kunagisa mentioned.

Doesn't explain it as much as you'd think. Tons of people get into Bleach/Naruto just because of their popularity, sit through the hundreds of episodes, and have no problem.

Personally I like reading the manga better.
But this isn't Mission Impossible where a car blows up every 3 mins, if you don't have a genuine interest in the story, you won't like it enough to stick with it.

With Bleach, I watched the first two seasons and eventually got sick of all the random side crap and filler, so switched to the manga. Loved it. If you don't like the anime/manga of a series, try switching to its counter-part. You may or may not find it much more enjoyable. Even if it is an extended series like Bleach or Naruto.

^perhaps I will try that. As a high school student, I enjoyed buying (inb4 >buying) issues of shonen jump and reading naruto and such, so maybe I just have some sick, terrible manga fetish.

This is understandable, too. I happily read through Gantz after a friend recommended it, but if someone recommended an animated series of a similar length, I might raise an eyebrow. I don't know what it is about manga, but who cares, man. It's good.

I don't think that's the problem. The problem is that the story drags out for too long. Not because they pack it with so much story, that wouldn't be the issue, but because it's the same story line that they extend unreasonably with stuff like "OH MAN, YOU THOUGHT I WAS P RANKED, BUT IF I TAKE A MAGIC MARKER AND DRAW ANOTHER LOOP AT THE BOTTOM, I BECOME B RANK! THAT'S RIGHT, I'M REALLY LETTER B!"
"WHAT, B RANK!?"
"OH GOD!"
"WHAT WILL WE DO NOW!?"

GTO runs 43 episodes, but they're awesome so it doesn't seem long.
The little girl in me likes School Rumble, too.
