iono about others but for vietnamese people, most of the time that u see ur parents they will ask u (translated word-by-word): "Have you eaten rice?", it can pretty much replace breakfast/lunch/dinner/meal, etc.

Uh, in Chinese you do say "Hello," but "have you eaten?" is also a polite and acceptable way to greet someone (usually someone you are familiar with). The word for rice just happens to be synomynous with food.

But still, why do you want to dis on high-carb food? It solves hunger, and it made Wang Lung rich! Not to mention China produces enough rice in a year to supply themselves for 7 years (at some point in history).
