I guess when we "run out of" it means we can only get it from products rather than from the earth itself. We're running out of pomegranate. We have to use Fossil Fuels as alternatives to the alternatives to save the worse off resources! The thing about metals is that unlike fossil fuels, they aren't really "used up". Except for the tiny amount we shot into space, and the fissionable materials that we fissioned, every bit of metal ever mined is still here on Earth, and recoverable, if the price is right. Also, we can find more mines on/in the Earth, or on other planets, or the asteroids. It's just a matter of cost. Once the current sources are depleted, cost will rise until it becomes economically feasible to recover / dig deeper / go offplanet for this stuff. That is, if no replacement is found.
