[COLOR="Navy"]Who thinks that this is gonna become something like Firefox, Opera, and all the other popular browsers?

Edit: I hope this is in the right spot.

They might as well have their own internet browser...... All the internet explorers I see have google toolbars all over the place.

This is just another small step in Google's takeover of the world Rolleyes

And if someone takes over, I want to be on their side. Wonder if it'll flop or not.

Chipping away at IE - good
More privacy violations - bad (and likely)

Which outweighs the other?

It'll have to be something truly special to make me switch from Firefox. I await the day when Google makes an operating system.

The article says "open source", but it doesn't say more precisely than that. Will it be a community effort a la Firefox, or will it remain purely written by Google? Google's a pretty cool company, and I'm sure they've read The Cathedral and the Bazaar; I wouldn't be surprised if they accept contributions from the public.

But what's in it for Google? If it's ad-supported, you could just take out the ad code.

EDIT: Oops, Google already *has* made an operating system. However, that's for mobile devices; what I meant was a desktop operating system.

I think It's a great idea personally. I've always been fond of google's website and other random stuff they do. However I probably wont ditch firefox for it Cool

'Open Source'? >:O
I must screw with it.

Oh god, Google's going to become the Wal Mart of the interwebs. T.T

Google launches internet browser - Katie - 2008-09-01

For all of us retarded people, can someone explain "open source" in simple terms Smile

Google launches internet browser - Hazzy - 2008-09-01

They put the code online for anyone to mess with. :>
Basicly gets them thousands of free developers. XD

Example:
Odin was closed source - only the Odin team had the source. They made it Open Source at one point, that's why anyone can set up a pServer now. :>

1) It's free to download and use
2) The source code is available freely, so programmers and the like can screw around with the coding to try to improve it and such.

I'm not surprised that they're doing something like this. What surprises me is that they're using Webkit (Safari's engine) instead of making a branded Firefox.

I think this is a good direction for them. I will reserve my judgement on the user interface until I get a chance to really play with it. The tabs on top of the location bar is one of those things that would take some getting used to.

(Warning: Nerdy Stuff Ahead)

I think the new Javascript engine sounds good also. I've seen sites choke Firefox and IE way too many times by going overboard with stuff like AJAX.

Gears integration... eh. I honestly never used Gears until today when I installed it to save loading times on a Wordpress site. But I think it has some potential.

I know that Google's privacy issues are a little scary, but if they make the source code available, then someone could really check to see if it's safe if they had the skills. Or they could just use a browser that's not backed by companies that profit on advertising (remember, Google owns DoubleClick).

Google has done that too, somewhat. With them entering the browser market, anything's possible.

I'll be very surprised if it's anything better than that of Internet Explorer (a.k.a. - pure pomegranate.)

Oh snap, it comes out today evening? I'm excited... over a browser. Although I do love Firefox and my MC Hammer add-on dearly, I'll probably test it for a while and slink back to Firefox.

Bwaahaha!

I am using Chrome right now. (I've been pissed with FF3 lately--it's been buggy as hell and crashing my computer a lot. Eek)

Pros? It's fast. Each of the tabs is a separate process so it'll never crash the whole thing if one tab crashes. It's also super compatible with every website ever since it basically runs Firefox (and if that doesn't apply, then Internet Explorer)-esque engines to bring up the website and display it. SO nothing is ever screwed up and there's no trouble for web designers looking to be -cross-browser compatible.

Cons? Scroll wheel doesn't work well (can't click it and scroll down, you know?), no Stumble yet, not many addons or anything yet, but it is open source and it is the first day so woo!

I think it could easily top Firefox or at least Opera...it's pretty sleek, no bloat (though I'm guessing there will be once addons come out).

http://maplestory.nexon.com isn't compatible with Google Chrome. =[

Yup, i'm using Google Chrome right now. Hopefully it will support add-ons in the near future.

Watch out Mozilla Firefox, you got competition coming up!

Google chrome is lightning fast. I love it. Minimalistic UI is nice too.

Google launches internet browser - Hazzy - 2008-09-02

I'm loving the gold-box outline. It likes to mask over my toolbar a lot, which is annoying, but it's spell check works in these quick reply boxes, so I'm loving it.

Although, I'd still like to see
  • Tab saving. When I close Chrome, will it save my tabs like FireFox can?
  • Less lag. I get a few seconds of lag when I open a new tab. Bit annoying.
  • AdBlock. I hate ads with a passion.

Google launches internet browser - Fiel - 2008-09-02

I'm using Chrome right now too. I LOVE it. It's very fast. It'll take some getting used to, though. I'm so used to Firefox.
