LowGradeOre BGM, Sudden removal, Rumors and Plagiarism. - aslemn - 2010-08-16
As many of you know, in the exact patch before Edelstein in KMST(KMST v.1.2.330), a pack of BGM's alongside Edelstein data was added.
These BGM's were:
-GelimmerLab (If i recall correctly, this one belongs to 4th job test)
-EdelsteinCity
-NationalPark
-UndergroundPlace
-Resistance HQ one
-PowerStation
-LowGradeOre
This one, got removed immediately after a patch, and replaced with another one without any reason. You can see the old version in this video.

What were the rumors?Everyone was wondering why such beautiful BGM got removed, and some people were saying it was because of Copyright Violation and plagiarism. But it took a while to someone tell which song had similar notes.
The song in question is: Rebirth of the Dark Myst from Final Fantasy IX.

Looks like both have nothing in common, eh?
Now get both videos, and compare between approximately 1:31 from LowGradeOre and 0:57 from Rebirth of Dark Mist.
As you can notice, the notes are VERY SIMILAR for more than 10 seconds.
Many of you may question if only ten seconds makes this an example of plagiarism, well, plagiarism in music aspect is a very hard situation to deal with.
If i recall correctly, you only need 8 consecutive notes to consider a song an example of plagiarism, which is very, very easy to occur.
Conclusion: There could be no reason to remove, and immediately replace a BGM like that, other than such situation.
It's not even intentional, because you can notice both songs have a very different melody. That might just be a mistake from the composers.
In fact, rumors are apparently correct. I may be wrong, but this is what i got out from analyzing these songs.

NexonNA got away with The Tragic Prince in Crimsonwood Keep, theres no source on why this was removed other than speculation.
It could be used in a future update or something...

Composer was probably influenced by that song. He might have done it unconsciously, he could've heard it somewhere but not paid attention to it and did not know a similar tune existed until this very moment.

This reminds me of when Softnyx had Street Fighter backgrounds in Gunbound. They promptly removed most of them(2 still lurk around IIRC).

I really doubt the person who made Low Grade Ore was purposely trying to rip of Dark Mist. I think it's either a case of, like Loose said, he had listened to the song before and did it unconsciously. Or maybe he liked the song and wanted to do a shout out to it but went too far.

The composer surely made that uncounsciously. It's not even a case of ripoff, because the melodies from both songs have nothing to do with each other. It's like Loose said, maybe he put that and didn't remember from where that came from.

Are you talking about The Tragic Prince? I am pretty sure we still have it, unless I am tone deaf or something. I believe he was talking about how there is no source on why Low Grade Ore was removed, so maybe they plan to use it somewhere else.
There is that other lovely tune they never used, I forget the name of it now.

Elfwood is used on JMS Maple Island. But yes, it has not been used for ages before JMS used it on their island.
There is another one that isn't used, WheretheBalrogCameFrom or somewhat is it's name.

Yeah, Elfwood, that's the one.
Anyway, it might not be a case of plagiarism since the songs aren't even that close. Even the few notes that sound the same are different. I believe it might be a case of using it somewhere else later.

That is... stupid. I heard both tunes 3 times and I could barely find the supposed "similar" notes. Who runs squarenix? Nexon NA?
Well I really hope they use it later. LowGradeOre is one of the few songs that don't feel really maple-like, but are still awesome. To be honest, i was a little disappointed they used it for mere lvl 50 training grounds, I hope they release stronger training areas in the future and decide to put it there instead. :3

We do still have it, that was my point, Crimsonwood Keep's music is about as comparable to The Tragic Prince as LowGradeOre is to this Final Fantasy song, I dont think plagiarism had anything to do with it, or they'd have changed Crimsonwood's music for us.

Well, what i'm trying to say is:
Seriously, could there be another reason for them to immediately Remove / Compose another song / Name it exactly like the previous one without saying any word about it?
That song was good enough to fit that area, the difference i'm trying to point is that. There are, of course, pomegranateloads of BGM's that are unused, but none of them were just erased, replaced with a new one made up very quickly and named exactly like the original.
Again, like many of you said, there's no source on that, i've never said there was any. It's just that the rumors, the sudden removal and all this situation fits perfectly what could have happened. Doing that in just a few days, without even mentioning that change anywhere, looking like they were trying to hide and correct a mistake before everyone knows about it.

To say they dont mention the change is sort of moot, Nexon doesnt communicate with their community much, in any version as far as I know.
It could have just been a song they didnt mean to put in that area and are saving for something else, we'll probably never know.

I love song remixes and medleys, I can usually pick out certain passages from remixes without looking at the titles. But hearing the two scores don't remotely give me any resemblance alert. People just overreact.
