I think it's more on the lines of: The black magician's minions & followers alike have set up a base camp in a city thats run by corruption and a sort of communism environment. You, the resistee, have to earn your freedom by doing tasks for the Blackwings in the name of a supposed justice.
Only to find out in the end that your efforts have harmed so many rather than help them, you force yourself to turn on those who had been using you this whole time.
In english: The black wings use you like they did Evan, you find out the truth and you eventualy turn against them.

Francis and the Giant use Evan as a pawn to kill, which apparently was an easy task due to Evan and Mir's naivety.
At around Lv70 or 80, Evan meets Mir's parent and realizes that he's being used. The quest line is called Denial of Truth, Anger, and Death or something.
I would assume their link with the Black Wings, and ultimately the Black Mage, is why they can use spells like Dark Fog.
Not sure if they edited that in the GMS version to be more sunshiny.
I -think- there was a quest that ties Evan and Aran, but I never played my Evan enough to see that.
