Welcome to AcornStory, our new ongoing feature where we help you get started in Maple World – everything from choosing a class to finding friends to understanding combat to tips for account security. MapleStory is easy to learn, but once you learn the basic game mechanics, where do you go and what do you do? That’s where AcornStory can help.

Choosing an "Explorer" class that's right for you!

In the last AcornStory, we discussed how to pick a character type that fits your play style. This time, we’ll be focusing in on a specific character type – the Explorer – and talking about what happens when you start playing.

Most players you meet in the game will be Explorers because they give you the most freedom in deciding how you want to play the game. Explorers can reach level 200 and can become anything in the game from a tough melee fighter to a spell-casting magician.

[Image: 007qx-0acd24cf-da65-4b9d-b242-930dc65fc7b7.JPG]

All Explorers begin the game on Maple Island where they learn the basics of the game. For your first 10 levels (eight for Magicians) you’ll be a “Beginner.” That lets you learn the game, make some friends, kill some monsters and determine how you would like to play the game. Once you reach level 10 (level eight for Magicians), though, it’s time to make the most important decision of the game – what class you’re going to play.

Your class determines what kind of powers and abilities you have, how you’ll fight and what your role is when playing in groups. This is called a "job advancement." As you continue to rise in levels, you'll receive further job advancements that refine your class and give you new abilities.

Pro tip: Some Explorer players never choose a class and stay Beginners all the way to level 200! This isn’t easy and is considered a very advanced form of play.

Here are your options:

[Image: 007kn-e8dbca1c-9bba-420e-adcc-76fd3cbd9a6e.gif] Warrior: A Warrior’s job is to wade into combat and take down enemies hand-to-hand.

Things to know about Warriors:

• They're tough.
• They do a lot of damage
• They have to fight up close
• They move slowly
• They usually use swords, axes, blunt weapons, spears, and polearms.

Becoming a Warrior: Once you reach level 10, speak with Phil in Lith Harbor to travel to the town of Perion. Once there, climb all the way to the top of the map and speak with “Dances with Balrog” to get started on your Warrior career. Dances with Balrog will give you a level one skill book called "The Basics of a Warrior." Once you use it, you'll see a list of basic Warrior skills you can learn. Select the one you want and assign Skill Points to acquire them.

Select the one you want and assign Skill Points to acquire them.

[Image: 007kn-b470bc40-d033-4a45-b024-058495eebfcc.gif] Thief Thieves use speed and stealth to quickly kill monsters.

More like: they aren't even able to train.

I'd consider it "the wrong form of play",

i love how they say magicians are extremely fragile, yet they are the second best in survival against bosses, being second only to warriors really

Magicians are the best at surviving, actually (bishops specially). Considering it's possible to achieve 30k HP and 30k MP you could take damage up to 59999.

Bishops also get a 30% reduction on physical damage and 50% on magical damage.

Technically, shadowers can achieve that, too. And without even using mp. Well, except to cast Meso Guard :p

Nothing advanced about leeching 100+ levels....

I find it ironic that they're releasing these as kMST completely revamps the classes.

Post kMST Patches, how high can Shadowers and Paladins tank?
Imagine a perfect world and perfect party.

Perfect party: 6 shadowers with max smokescreen. 10 second smokescreen + 60 second cooldown = godmode

EDIT: changed 10 to 60

AcornStory: Choosing the Explorer that's Right for for You - Hazzy - 2010-06-24

Godmode != tank. Tank means to take damage and survive. You tricky Lawyer-types.

I could have used this in the beginning. There was no info on anything without going into forums which I didn't know about until much later.
