How does it work?

I understand more stats = change to color "x"

But how?

+5/+15/+40 from average point for Blue/Purple/Gold, I believe.

Orange is for scrolled equips that haven't yet met Blue.

It's more like +8, +23, +40. Eg. my pants are 24 stats above average and they only turned purple when the last scrolled worked (21 -> 24).

White equips are unscrolled, grey equips are below average (scrolled or unscrolled), orange fits in the gap between average and blue.

Also note that HP/MP count as 1 every 5hp/mp

This sounds more correct, although I'd like to point out that there's no Orange equips that hasn't had a scroll land on it. I believe orange denotes "failed scrolling".

Well, orange means it's at least above average Tongue

This doesn't really relate to your question, but I thought I should note that added new colors in one of the recent patches to KMS.

Among these colors is pink and green. I have no idea which stats these happen at though. But I think Pink happens above Gold.

Late, but this is what I had from a while ago, where 1 point signifies 1 point above average (or 10 in the case of HP/MP).

Grey: < 0
White/Orange: 0 - 5
Blue: 6 - 22
Purple: 23 - 39
Gold: 40 +

Orange: 1 stat above average (Only when scrolled)
Blue: 6 stats above average
Purple: 22 stats above average
Gold: 41 stats above average
Green: 55 above average (Guesstimate)
Pink: 70 above average (Guesstimate)
