I'm not surprised, unfortunately. To me, the only reason why McAfee seems to stand out as an antivirus is because Microsoft uses it. Rumor has it that they produce viruses that their antivirus can catch.

McAfee glitch causes trouble in RI emergency rooms

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A glitch in McAfee antivirus software caused trouble in several Rhode Island emergency rooms.
Nancy Jean, a spokeswoman for the Lifespan system of hospitals, says they had to turn away non-trauma patients from their ERs. She says they fixed the problem by late Wednesday afternoon.
ERs at Hasbro Children's Hospital, Miriam Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital, the state's largest, all in Providence as well as at Newport Hospital, the only hospital on Aquidneck Island, were turning away non-trauma patients, but still treating life-threatening and serious injuries.
Jean says they also canceled some elective surgeries.
Lifespan represents about a third of the state's hospitals.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Health says no other hospitals reported a problem.
Police officers in Lexington, KY had to go old school with handwritten reports, phones and radios as a computer glitch shut down systems.
According to Kentucky.com, Kentucky state police shut down computer systems including terminals in officers’ cars as IT staff worked to fix the problem. Apparently, a security update from McAfee corrupted the systems. The glitch happened about 1:30 p.m. EDT.
Police said they could still respond to complaints even though they were IT free.
School districts across the state were also having troubles. All public school districts use the same network.
A massive computer glitch on a statewide network is causing problems for schools and law enforcementacross Kentucky.
Kentucky State Police Lt. David Jude said Wednesday that state police personnel have been instructed to turn off computers while technicians try to resolve the problem. Jude says the problem has not interrupted the ability of state police to respond to complaints.
Lexington Police spokesperson Sherelle Roberts says the glitch is also impacting Lexington Police. The mayor ordered the city's computers shut down this afternoon, but said around 5:30pm that email and the city's website was back up. The mayor contends police, fire and E911 systems are functioning normally, as are traffic computers. City technicians have identified a fix, but each computer will have to be fixed individually. A news release from the city says about 125 city computers are directly impacted.
Kentucky Education Department spokeswoman Lisa Gross says the glitch is affecting school districts across the state. She says it occurred when the security software, McAfee, distributed a security update that apparently corrupted computer systems. McAfee Inc. confirmed a software update caused its anti-virus program for corporate customers to misidentify a harmless file.
Late Wednesday afternoon the state received a temporary fix. Technology staff in all 174 school districts have been provided with the temporary fix. Gross says the Education Department is still actively working with McAfee to find a long-term solution.

McAfee has anti-virus software.
Microsoft uses their services primarily and distributes their product.
Software is faulty.
Blame is placed on the ones letting this product get into the market.
by loose logic if no one ever used/distributed McAfee, we wouldn't have issues with them. it'd be another anti-virus program that'd fill that position since someone has to be the fool in the group. *But if the product doesnt get out, then it isnt capable of harming anyone.

Meh. This is why whenever someone in my house gets a new computer, they bring it to me to uninstall all the useless crap it comes with and put in some real computer essentials. I don't know anyone who uses Mcaffee, but I'm not too surprised at how many people use it. After all, there are a ton of people who know nothing about their computer, and stay with whatever services were pre-installed on their machine when they got it from Best Buy or something. Surely, Geek Squad will hook up the computer with what it needs, instead of adding useless products for you to purchase, right?

It affected some people at my work.
Fixing it isn't too difficult, though.
Start in safe mode with networking, use command prompt to delete avvscan.dat, restore svchost.exe from system32/dllcache, fixed.

The sick irony is no one will be able to look up this information on their computer because it's borked. At least not until they go to the Library or something.

I'd just like to say that Geek Squad is trash, they're not even computer-techs. It's a bunch of High School kids trying to get a quick job because they have some computer experience. I can come to GeekSquad and ask a question about which out of whatever is the best processor, and they wouldn't even know. If you bother to even use Geek Squad as a credible techie, you might as well throw your money away for free.
I don't even go to Geek Squad, because I know it's just a ploy for BestBuy to make more money. If you need professional advice, seek your most trusted IT-professor or someone you know that is majoring in IT to help.

I never liked McAfee. It asked too many questions about the programs I was running. >.>
