Nexon Wrote:Greetings players,

We wanted to address you today about Nexon’s efforts to fight online hacking and improve online safety for all Nexon gamers.

The importance of online security gained national attention following Google’s revelation that their Gmail service was hacked in China. Since then, no less than 36 companies have come forward, and detailed similar problems that they have faced. As an online game company, one of Nexon’s most important missions is protecting player accounts from theft. This is a common goal shared by every online company, and achieving this goal is an ongoing fight to protect our players.

At the end of 2009, we received increased reports of accounts being compromised. While we have said little about this publicly, we have been aggressively investigating and fighting this issue and the groups behind it on multiple fronts. In order to maintain the effectiveness of these efforts, we cannot provide much detail, but we would like to share with you some of the progress we have made so far.

First and foremost, our customer support team has been working to provide relief for people who have been affected by a recent account compromise issue. Once we have more details to share, affected players who have submitted a support ticket will be contacted individually by our support team. We are very thankful to our players who have been patient during this ongoing process. Our goal is to provide more updates as we further develop our relief program.

We have also taken the following steps to improve players’ online safety:

· Enhanced the security of our technological infrastructure. This includes, but is not limited to, aggressive blocking of IP addresses originating from areas outside our service region.
· Stepped up legal enforcement efforts against malicious online users and organized groups both foreign and domestic. We’re currently working very closely with law enforcement personnel in multiple countries across our service area and are actively pursuing criminal and civil cases against hack site and private server operators who are in violation of national and international laws.
· Improved online safety features to help our players safely visit not just our websites, but all websites across the Internet. In just one example, we recognized that many people were using the same login credentials across multiple websites. In order to address that issue, we recently initiated a password update campaign to encourage all of our players to update their passwords regularly.

In other areas, we are committed to improving our customer support. We revamped the Nexon Support website, upgraded our ticketing system, and launched the Nexon Knowledge Base to help players find the answers they need faster. Within our games, we are integrating a new spam and language filters to fight advertising and inappropriate comments.

We have also put more emphasis on our community outreach efforts. Most recently, we launched Facebook pages, actively engaged with our forum community, and increased our general communications both about the games and especially during maintenances in order to keep you informed.

It has been almost five years since Nexon America opened its doors and we are humbled and truly appreciative of the support and devotion shown by the dedicated fans of all of Nexon’s games. You are the lifeblood of Nexon America, and we can’t thank you enough. We look forward to many more years of enjoyment and safety on the Internet.

On behalf of all of us here at Nexon, thank you again.

The Nexon Team

Wait. This isn't really a good thing.

Nexon’s Commitment to Online Safety - Typhoon - 2010-03-30

atleast they do admit that people were being hacked, and not just by social engineering.

Nexon’s Commitment to Online Safety - Sarah - 2010-03-30

Good to see they realise the importance of bad press. This still doesn't explain what happened, and they probably never will, but this is a good step in the right direction. They need to keep this up whenever something big happens, though.

In other news: started shaking and almost cried a little upon starting to read this. It's not MASSIVE but it's big, and it's good. Nexon knows this "vocal minority" is serious.

Nice communication over there. Good to see them giving the reasons for all those recent changes and admiting there were security problems.

Nexon’s Commitment to Online Safety - Kalovale - 2010-03-31

Was reading this just now. Seems like Sarah made them speak.

Lol, thanks for the laugh, Nexon.

Does anyone really believe Nexon anymore? They come out with this drivel every 12 months or so, yet nothing changes.

Exactly my point.
They failed to hold their word so many times, it's not even worth trusting them anymore

Nicenice, the return of the Open Letter.

Nexon’s Commitment to Online Safety - Sarah - 2010-03-31

There is a difference this time; we've got leverage if they don't keep their word. This is a clear response to the action taken against them and the resulting emails sent to the consumerist. If they screw this up, they're in bigger trouble than before. So yeah, it's not EXACTLY the same, though I wouldn't count on Nexon changing.

Last time was a response to the BBB. Clearly, Nexon is bulletproof.

PS. You're missing that new panda.

Big difference between bad media publicity and bad BBB rating, and they know it.

Also I don't want THEIR panda's. They're all terrible. I only have the one as a placemark for the rage of bad customer service bear.

I read the first part and got hopeful, then I read the second part and realized they were just cherry-picking random things they have done and using champion level BS to make it seem like they are actually addressing real security.

How many times can you pat yourself on the back for making everyone change their passwords, Nexon? -_-

Also... "Within our games, we are integrating a new spam and language filters to fight advertising and inappropriate comments." Uhhh... What are they going to do, filter "Nexon sucks"? Filtering illegit site names doesn't help since they find a way around the filter in 5 minutes (I mean duh), and the curse filter already stars out half of perfectly normal conversations...

BBB response :
Company's Initial Response - Posted 03/25/2010
Hello, I'm sorry to see that you felt you needed to bring this issue to the BBB. Please remember that Nexon America does not provide customer support through third party systems like the BBB. Please be sure to submit a ticket through the ticketing system and in your ticket explain your issue and give as much detail as possible.

I gave them a ticket number in my response, which was opened on 03/11/10

Great customer service, Nexon.

Yes, this is what I was thinking. The first half sounds nice, but when you get to the second half you realize they're not really saying they plan on changing anything big soon. It's more like:

"We saw the complaints, but look at all we've done lately. Surely, everyone will see how badly we proved all of your ungrateful asses wrong. See the security measures we put it? Now nobody will take you guys seriously, because they see you're all a bunch of lying children. We do help with security, and we did improve customer support, so you've no reason to whine to 3rd party sources. Fuck you guys for making The Consumerist write an article on us."

That's pretty much how I read it. The other stuff is okay though, but it's not like we'll get too much of a notable change. Especially not in customer service. New ticketing system looks okay, but it's the same piece of shit that you threw in a fancier toilet. It doesn't mean it's not shit. Changing the interface doesn't solve the problem with the poor customer service.

Nice to see they actually said something about recent security breeches and a "we're working on it" though.

The truth is, the entire time I was reading that, it felt like the whole thing was written in response to (and in defense of them against) the consumerist incident.

Nexon’s Commitment to Online Safety - Fumni - 2010-03-31

It took them way too long to just admit the truth.

They lost me for the long run. Hopefully they get their act together so whoever is left playing will stick with them, but I know better at this point.

Maplestory is a solid product being managed by incompetent clowns. If they had just admit this in January, I'd still be playing.
