So, I usually like the challenge presented by battling leaders/powerful trainers with an underleveled team; it just increases the satisfaction when I win. This is how things have been going:

Falkner: Won second try, 9 Totodile, 8 Gastly
Bugsy: Won second try, 10 Zubat, 12 Totodile, 12 Gastly
Whitney: Won first try, 14 Zubat, 13 Gastly, 14 Totodile,
Morty: Won second try, 17 Zubat, 17 Growlithe, 18 Dratini, 18 Gastly, 18 Croconaw, 8 Kangaskhan (lol)
Chuck: Won second try, 24 Crobat, 25 Croconaw, 23 Dratini, 24 Haunter, 24 Growlithe
Jasmine: Won first try, 25 Crobat, 24 Croconaw, 24 Dratini, 25 Haunter, 24 Growlithe
Price: Won first try, 27 Crobat, 28 Croconaw, 26 Dratini, 28 Gengar, 26 Growlithe
Clair: Won first try, 33 Crobat, 33 Feraligatr, 34 Dragonair, 36 Gengar, 35 Arcanine
Kimono Girls: Won third try (fuckin' Jolteon): 35 Crobat, 37 Feraligatr, 35 Dragonair, 38 Gengar, 37 Arcanine

Now, this is how the E4 on the first try went:

Will: Won first try, Feraligatr, Gengar, Dragonair KOed: 37 Crobat, 38 Feraligatr, 38 Dragonair, 39 Gengar, 37 Arcanine
Koga: Lost, KOed Ariados and Venomoth, revived entire team beforehand

Holy crap the E4 is hard ajlsdkfjalsekfjlawekj I have to buff up my Pokemon, if I lost at Koga with a full team, I don't know how hard Lance will be...so I'm getting my entire team to like 43 or something. Then I can gloat that I beat Lance with a semi-underleveled team. :3

So how about you? Do you guys just level up one Pokemon and go for it or what?

Unfortunately, I was getting too much EXP for this game to be a challenge.

I started with a Cyndaquil, a traded Scyther and a traded Croagunk. I'm only going to post the Pokemon that actually battled, the others weren't needed or are HM slaves.

Falkner: L10 Cyndaquil, L10 Scyther.
Bugsy: L13 Cyndaquil, L13 Scyther.
Whitney: L23 Croagunk.
Morty: L30 Scyther, L27 Espeon (from a L1 Eevee I traded in).
Chuck: L32 Espeon. Defeated him with 4 Confusions.
Jasmine: L34 Espeon.
Pryce: L38 Espeon, L36 Magneton.
Clair: L46 Espeon, L44 Magneton, L45 Scyther.
Kimono Girls: L50 Scyther. Took 'em all down.

E4: L58 Espeon, L57 Scyther, L46 Magneton, L45 Lugia.

Espeon's best asset: High Speed and Special Attack with Confusion, then Psybeam and now, finally, Psychic.
Scyther's best asset: High Speed and Attack with X-Scissor, Night Slash.
Magneton's best asset: High Defense with Magnet Bomb then Mirror Shot, Thundershock then Discharge, Thunderwave.
Lugia's best asset: Aeroblast and stalling with Fly (dodged Lance's Dragonite's Outrage).

I'm building a Staryu into a Starmie at the moment, which will accompany my Espeon, Scyther and Magneton.

How is it even possible to be underleveled in HG/SS?! In my Japanese version playtrough I didn't have any level problems until Red (my whole team was in the high 50s with nothing but the powered up E4 and Red to defeat), all I had to do was get the gym leaders to rematch me a few times until I could defeat the new E4, then grinded my way up to Red.

I have used more healing items than I usually do though, mainly because the trainers only get your team to ~5 levels below the next challenge, and with the amounts of moves the Pokémon have acces to in the higher levels now(simply because there are more moves, and abilities too) you have a bigger challenge than with the original games. Level grinding sucks, but I will do it on my EU version, before defeating Green as the E4 powers up after getting the 16th badge, and not after Red. It will be like 8 badges, E4, 7 badges, E4 until high 60s, Badge, E4 until high 70s/low 80s, Red.

Team I used in JP HG: Typhlosion, Ampharos, Victreebel, Crobat, Gyarados, Ho-oh(replaced by Scizor in Kanto).
Team I plan on using in EU SS: Typhlosion, Ampharos, Victreebel, Crobat, Quagsire, Gengar/Haunter(this team should have less difficulties).

I did use an underleveled team in Platinum, but for some reason Diamond was harder.

This is actually a pretty large problem of mine that I'm trying extremely hard to prevent in my current playthrough of HG. In nearly every Pokemon game I've played, my starter is 10, or even 20 levels higher than the rest of my team and ends up being the only Pokemon used to beat Gym Leaders. It's the easy way out, even when you're up against leaders that are strong against whatever element your starter represents. I guess I wouldn't know how hard this would be at the Elite 4 since I haven't made it up there in Platinum, but I remember using a level 100 Pikachu to dominate both Yellow and Gold's E4. I've been doing well so far in Heart Gold, with my Croconaw only being 4 levels higher than my next best Pogey. :3

My Feraligatr is level 73 and I didn't even get 16 badges yet.

No idea why everyone always seems to have a super high levelled team. My team at Lance was a level 46 Weavile / level 42 Vibrava / level 41 Crobat / all level 30s. I don't see anything wrong with the HG/SS scaling, it's actually harder than most other games since there's nowhere to grind.

I don't skip trainers and I only use Repels through long caves, so I'm not rushing in any way.

I usually attempt the E4 with all 50s, but this time around I'm going to go for it at 46 or so.

I usually always play with underleveled teams. Add more to the challenge.

If you want more of a challenge, play on Set mode while underleveled. Was plain hell back on Emerald, especially against Drake.

I challenged the E4 again. I did pretty well, for my standards at least.

 team

Gengar was able to basically sweep Will; I had to use one Revive at the end though because Slowbro was able to survive one Shadow Ball; Crobat finished it off and I used Arcanine to beat the last Xatu.

Arcanine and Dragonair made easy work of Koga; Muk was a problem though, since I don't have any Psychic or Steel attacks.

Bruno wasn't too hard. Crobat was able to take care of Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee, Gengar 2HKOed Machamp, and Feraligatr took care of Onix and Hitmontop.

Karen is where I lost. Umbreon successfully tanked almost my entire team (I decided to lead with Crobat; Gengar didn't OHKO the Kimono Girl's Umbreon with Focus Blast, I figured the same would happen here), but it switched out when I sent out Feraligatr against it. Arcanine took care of Vileplume, Gengar took care of her Gengar, Crobat KOed Umbreon, and Gengar took care of Murkrow. I would've lost against Lance anyway, since I had one Revive left and Crobat and Gengar were the only two left, but I still wanted to beat Karen. Gengar used Thunderbolt to beat Murkrow and I had to switch in and out for it to be able to get Houndoom. I just had to pray that it didn't Crunch when that happened. I switched Crobat in, U-turned back to Gengar, and it used Nasty Plot--a stroke of luck! Not really. Focus Blast missed, and it used Crunch on Gengar. It subsequently KOed Crobat. End E4 run.

Gengar leveled to 42 and Crobat to 39; I should be able to get them if I level up a tiny bit more and bring more healing items.

Yes. I had to use 3 hyper potions and that was it.

68 Typhlosion, 45 Lugia, 30 Red Gyarados, 3 "Rocky" (the Onix you get from a trade), 3 Bellsprout, 2 Pidgey
I only used Typhlosion. No EV training.

Just to let you know that Umbreon is basically a Tank with average HP (base 110 def and base 130 SPDef) (It managed to live a lv 8x Fully EV and good IV Alakazam's Focus Blast, Lucario's Aura Sphere, and my Ampharo's Signal beam..), so if you want the OHKO, you gotta use physical Bug/Fighting attacks.

Sadly, all I have is Reversal on Arcanine and Focus Blast on Gengar; gotta go with Focus Blast.

Speaking of which, I tried Lance again, with my team having leveled up once or twice from last time...and his level 50 Dragonite destroyed me. I plowed through pretty much every E4 member and half of Lance's team, but his Dragonite is like, immune to status conditions or something. Only slept for one turn, confusion from Outrage has never affected it...>_>

I can kill it with a third round rollout in a single hit.

Best way to kill any Umbreons is to Taunt it, set up a Sub, and just spam Focus Punch like crazy. It's attack stats (both) are so feeble that it shouldn't be able to break your Sub. You could always try using Reversal too. Not sure if at the point in the game you're at, if you could get something like Scyther with Endure + Reversal or not. Should be able to though.
