gizmodo Wrote:It appears to be graphene day. First, IBM was using the material to shame silicon into submission, and now Swedish scientists say graphene could one day make lamps and other traditional lighting elements unnecessary.

If the Swedes are right, then future homes and buildings could be adorned with graphene panels, called light emitting electromechanical cells (LECs, for short).

The LEC panels can be fashioned so they cover an entire ceiling, wall, or whatever, and they're completely adjustable. Dim your walls and ceiling for a romantic evening with the female characters of Mass Effect 2, for example.

The article notes that OLED panels have seen similar implementations, but the graphene scientists say their material is both cheaper to produce and better for the environment (OLED panels contain indium tin oxide, which is difficult to recycle). [Science Daily via Treehugger via DVICE]

Great! now we have lamps that are more economic and we can change the color of our walls easier, we just need to waste like 20 days to set-up all of them, anyways this is an awesome thing

Wow, this could be awesome. Does it save electricity/money on lightbulbs compared to lights?

This thing kind of glows without no specific reason, and i dont think it will need electricity, it will probably be light powered

I think its around the same but I wouldn't care! Its so much cooler looking.
EDIT: Ok...

I wonder if you can configure it to have a specific image on it, that would be soooooo awesome

Which means the electricity saved overall is a ton, which is a really big deal.

@ above: Computer screen on the wall?

your walls are glowing - Russt - 2010-02-07

Probably does require electricity, considering it's an "electromechanical cell". But I would hope it's more efficient than traditional lights, else they wouldn't have researched it.

@ above: YESPLS. But even if you could only adjust it to one color, it would still be cool.

no, I meant like you could post a beach on it, or maybe your girlfriend“s picture, But im sure that some pervs would post hentai on it o.0, but the idea of the computr screen is cool

I didn't mean to imply that they use no electricity at all. They would be in every room in the country by now if they didn't. Unless you were responding to someone else.

I understood what you mean, i just took it a few steps further.

I'd rather go with this as a computer screen.

Can you animate paint? I think not.

But anyway... the point is not images on the wall, it's light.

@ other article
What would be the point of a translucent computer screen, anyway? Just makes the display harder to see.

I was thinking that too. That shit looks like it'd be annoying as hell. Not to mention people can see what you're doing from the other side.

It looks like one of those things that seem cool when you first read the idea, but when you actually get it you realize how bad it is.

your walls are glowing - Sn1perJohnE - 2010-02-07

You know...someones gonna make a giant penis out of these on their wall. Bewbs too.

And everybody looking at the back of the computer can see what you're doing.
