I only have a mom, and i usually tune her out.

For my mother, I tend to tune her out, as arguing with her just makes her cry (extremely emotionally sensitive). My dad calmly discusses things with me, so I just talk with him.

The phrase "tuning out" sounds so harsh, it's almost like saying "I don't care what you think, I know I'm right and you're wrong, you're not worth my precious listening time" to their face. Keyword: almost.

Whenever I'm at home, my parents aren't the most rational people I know, so I reason with them if they disagree with the way I live. It works most of the time.

Tuning out is more "I don't care" than "I'm right/you're wrong." It's saying that basically either you get their point, but they are still droning on (my mother) or that the argument doesn't interest you.
